BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The No. 13 ranked Baker University women’s basketball team moved to 2-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference after beating William Penn University, 75-67, Saturday afternoon inside Liston Stadium.
The Wildcats sprung out to an early double-digit lead, leading 20-10 after the first quarter. The Statesmen were held to 3-of-17 shooting in the quarter, while the Wildcats shot 6-14.
Baker was able to improve on their lead in the second quarter, holding a 41-29 advantage over William Penn at halftime.
BU was on fire from the 3-point line, making 7-of-14, and also held a major 28-16 rebounding advantage over the Statesmen. Kelsey Larson scored nine of her team-leading 18 points in the first half, she also led the Wildcats in steals with five, and assists with three. Mackenzie Cook had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Statesmen were able to pull within four points in the third quarter, making 10-of-13 shots. Keshunda Williams led the way for William Penn with nine third quarter points.
WPU tied the game up at 60-60 early in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats responded with an 8-0 run to take a permanent lead. Joann Lira led the Wildcats in the final quarter with six points.
Baker is now 4-1 overall on the season, and will take on 5-1 Missouri Valley College at 5:30 pm Tuesday on the road. The Vikings lost their first game on Saturday to Graceland University.
