BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Baker University men’s soccer team earned the number 11 seed and will host Midland University (Neb.) this Saturday, November 19 at Liston Stadium in the Opening Round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Time of the event is TBA.
This marks the fourth-straight season Baker men’s soccer has qualified for the NAIA National Championship Tournament. This marks Baker’s ninth appearance in the event and they sport a 6-7-1 record all-time.
Baker enters the tournament with a record of 13-4-2 and finished the Heart of America Athletic Conference with a record of 9-1-2 and earned the number 3 at-large spot this year.
Midland is 16-3-1 and earned the number 6 at-large spot to qualify for the tournament. The Warriors will make its third appearance in the event and is 0-2 all-time, in fact its last appearance came at Liston Stadium in the 2013 NAIA Opening Round, in which Baker won, 2-1, in double overtime. Kyle Young and alum Ben Coyle supplied Baker with the goals.
Baker ranks number 18 in the country in shots on goal per game, averaging 9.5, and has posted eight shut outs this season, ranking number 30 in the NAIA. The Wildcats have outscored their opponents, 51-19, this season.
The Warriors rank number 3 in the country in assists with 61 and number. 7 nationally in total goals scored with 72.
Ali Sodal leads Midland with 23 goals scored this season and ranks number 3 in the NAIA in that category, he also has five game winning goals. Midland has outscored its opponents, 72-20.
BU is led in scoring by sophomore Steeve Pouna who has nine goals scored this season, he was joined by teammate Spencer Atkin on the 2016 Heart of America Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team.
Five other Wildcats earned a spot on the All-Conference team this season including Kyle Young, Blake Levine, Peyton Brown, Gonnie Ben-Tal and Keaton Anchors.
