BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – Three members of the number 2 ranked Baker University football team were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District College Division team, announced on Thursday.
The three Wildcats include senior defensive end Nick Becker, junior quarterback Logan Brettell and junior offensive lineman Kyle Wittman.
They are the most Wildcats selected from one Baker team since the BU football team in 2014, when Michael Lisher, Gunnar McKenna and Tanner Clark were named to the list.
The award's purpose is to recognize the nations top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
First-Team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected in November.
The three ‘Cats are among a group of 26 athletes named to the First-Team College Division from District 3 which comes from a pool of athletes from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
They are also part of a group of just five players on the list from the Heart of America Athletic Conference, joined by Evangel’s Brock West and Peru State’s Gunnar Orcutt.
Brettell has been named a Heart of America Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week four times this season and has broken the single season record for passing yards this year with 3,275 and he has the school record for most completions in a season with 261.
He also broke the school record for touchdown passes in a single game with seven in the 89-27 win over Culver-Stockton.
Becker is seventh on the team in tackles this season with 30 and third on the team in tackles for loss with eight. He is also third on the team in sacks with four for 25 yards.
Wittman was named a 2015 Heart of America Athletic Conference First Team All-Conference Offensive Lineman a year ago and has helped lead Baker this season to a number 1 ranking in total pass offense with 3,634 yards and is number 1 nationally in sacks allowed with four.
Only five Baker student-athletes have ever been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, Josh Rydberg (Men's Soccer), Jordan Dolbin (Women's Soccer), Katie Thurbon (Women's Track & Field), Lindsey Mateer (Women's Golf) and Aaron Caldwell (Men's Track & Field).
Number 2 Baker hosts number. 9 Missouri Valley this Saturday, November 5 at 1 p.m. inside Liston Stadium.
