ATCHISON, Kansas – The number 13 ranked Baker University women’s basketball team finished the Heart/KCAC Classic 2-0 after defeating The University of Saint Mary 77-56 on Saturday afternoon.
Courtney Hoag led all scorers with a career-high 18 points. She also added nine rebounds and two blocks off the bench for the Wildcats.
After scoring 13 points in the first quarter, Baker got hot offensively and surpassed 20 points in each of the next three quarters. They held the Spires to just 27.9 percent shooting for the game, and 1-12 from the 3-point line.
The Wildcats dominated the boards, gathering 50 rebounds, 18 of them on the offensive end. They also outnumbered the Spires in assists 16-4.
After losing the first quarter 15-13, the Wildcats came back to take a 34-26 halftime lead. BU extended the lead to 54-38 after the third quarter, before winning by 21 points.
The Wildcats had four scorers in double digits with Hoag’s 18, Kelsey Larson adding 15, Caitlin Modesett with 11 and Mackenzie Cook with 10. Larson led the Wildcats in assists with five, and steals with two.
The Wildcats will take on their first conference opponent in Clarke University at noon on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Dubuque, Iowa. The 2-0 Crusaders are led by Kelsey Ernst, who is averaging 19.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per game.
