FOOTBALL: Brettell, Kock Named Heart Player's of the Year, Baker Garners 23 All-Conference Awards

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The 2016 Heart of America Athletic Conference Southern Division champion No. 2 ranked Baker University football team earned 23 Heart All-Conference award winners announced on Monday, including 2016 Heart South Offensive Player of the Year Logan Brettell and for the second-straight season Co-Defensive Player of the Year went to Josk Kock.

Also for the second-straight season and third time in the last four years, Baker head coach Mike Grossner was named the Conference’s Coach of the Year, while offensive coordinator Miguel Regalado was named the Assistant Coach of the Year.

Brettell has put together one of the best offensive seasons in Baker history leading the Wildcats to a current perfect 12-0 record.

The junior leads the nation in total passing yards with 4,150 and has thrown a Baker record 42 TD’s. He also broke the school mark for TD’s in a game with seven against Culver-Stockton.

Kock was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year in the Heart South last season, sharing the award with current student assistant coach Tucker Pauley.

This season he shares the honor with Missouri Valley linebacker, Stephen Thayer. Kock is sixth on the team this season with 47 tackles and has seven sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss.

Joining Brettell on the First Team All-Conference on the offensive side of the ball includes WR Clarence Clark, WR Quanzee Johnson, OL Kyle Wittman, OL Knute Holden, OL Damon Gebhardt, RB Cornell Brown and kicker Clark.

Clark is the schools leader in receiving yards, receptions and receiving TD’s and Johnson is just two TD’s shy of tying Clarks record for TD receptions in a season with 16.

Brown has combined for 27 TD’s this season with 21 on the ground and six receiving, he is also averaging 5.8 yards per run.

Joining Kock on the First Team All-Conference defensive team includes DL Nick Becker, LB Akim Francis, LB Kharon Brown, DB Avery Parker, S Darrain Winston, punt returner Damon Nolan and athlete Brown.

Becker just tied a BU record for sacks in a game with four, in BU’s 44-21 NAIA First Round win over No. 13 Sterling, while Kharon Brown is second on the team in tackles with 79.

Francis is the team leader in tackles with 83 and has supplied Baker with 13.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions.

Winston leads the NAIA in interceptions with nine and Parker is second on the team in interceptions with four. Nolan has returned 35 punts this season and averages 12.2 per attempt.

Four Wildcats were named to the Second Team All-Conference including Nolan as a wide receiver, WR Ladai Shawn Boose, DL Aderio Ammons and DB Nate McLaurin.

Three ‘Cats earned a spot on the Honorable Mention Defensive squad, that list includes DL Nick Shondell, LB Mikeice Adams and safety Hayden Jenkins.

Coach Grossner now has 96 wins in his career for the Wildcats, putting him third all-time at Baker and just two more wins would jump him to second all-time.

The Baker Wildcats put together the programs first 11-0 perfect regular season in school history and currently rank No. 1 in the NAIA in total passing yards with 4,509 and No. 2 in the country in total scoring with 611, averaging 50.9 points per game.

The Wildcats will next host No. 8 Lindsey Wilson at 2:36 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 26 inside Liston Stadium in the NAIA Quarterfinals.
