Baker Men's Soccer Ends Heart Tournament Run

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The number 3 seeded Baker University men’s soccer team fell in the quarterfinals of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday night to number 6 seeded Grand View University, 4-1.

The Vikings had only three shot attempts in the first half, but converted on one of those in the 16th minute, and an own goal by the Wildcats to give Grand View a 2-0 lead by the 20th minute.

The Wildcats thought to have on a goal from Steeve Pouna shortly after the Vikings’ second goal, but it was called back, due to Cody Sliva stepping on the in bounds line on a throw in that Pouna slammed into the back of the net.

Baker ended up getting on the board late in the first half on a goal from Joah Hickel, assisted by Jordan Thacker. The Wildcats took a 2-1 deficit into halftime.

The Vikings then scored less than ten minutes into the period on Danton Irelan’s second goal of the match.

In the 65th minute, Bruno Henrique added to the Viking lead when he sent a shot past goal keeper Patrick Rydberg. Rydberg played the entire second half, after Nick Riggle started the game.

The Wildcats out shot the Vikings, 11-7, in the match and had more shots on goal with six compared to Grand View’s five. The Wildcats were also victims of 21 Grand View fouls, while committing just 10 of their own.

Hickel and Steeve Pouna led Baker in shots with three and Joe Houlihan led the way with two shots on goal.
