Country Superstar Luke Bryan will Come to Baldwin City

On Thursday June 26, 2017 Luke Bryan announced the stops for his ninth annual Farm Tour. According to the announcement, the tour will begin in Lincoln, NE on September 28, 2017.  The Bayer Presents Luke Bryan Farm Tour 2017 is scheduled to run Sept. 28 through Oct. 7. Visiting six farming communities during those two weeks. Baldwin City is the second stop scheduled on the tour.
That stop on September 29, will be at Don-Ale Farms at 1038 N 600 Rd Baldwin City, KS. The concert begins at 6 P.M. with the gates opening for parking at 2 P.M.
The Bayer Presents Luke Bryan Farm Tour 2017 is set to run Sept. 28 through Oct. 7.

Governor Signs Seven Bills into Law

Topeka – Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed several bills into law this past week. 

Senate Bill 89 into law. This bill amends the law relating to the collection of certain vehicle title and registration fees.
House Substitute for Senate Bill 40 – Establishes new criminal charges aimed at reducing human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and requires holders of Commercial Drivers Licenses be trained to recognize possible human trafficking.

House Substitute for Senate Bill 120– Updates the code for civil procedure.
                  
Senate Bill 149 – Amends statutes regarding briefing in the Kansas Supreme Court and representation of state agencies by the Attorney General’s office. 

Senate Substitute for House Bill 2053 – Creates the Crisis Intervention Act and amends the law related to mental health.
House Bill 2054 – Allows certain state agencies to share information with one another for the purpose of carrying out their official duties, allows for the Kansas Department of Corrections to request assistance from other jurisdictions if needed, and amends the law related to fee funds.
House Bill 2041 – Extends the sunset date for the judicial surcharge and amends how certain fee funds are utilized. 

The Governor has now signed 80 bills into law this session and vetoed two. By law, the Kansas governor has 10 calendar days to sign the bill into law, veto the bill or allow the bill to become law without his or her signature.

Battlefield Tours Led by John Brown

To commemorate the 161st Anniversary of the Battle of Black Jack, there will be two tours of the battlefield conducted by John Brown, in which he will tell of the events leading up to the battle, how the battle occurred, progressed, and ended, and the results of the action.

The first tour will begin at 1:00 p.m., and the second tour will begin at 4:00 p.m.

All commemoration events are free and open to the public. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Battlefield Tours Led by John Brown

As part of the Civil War on the Western Frontier activities commemorating the 154th anniversary of Quantrill's Raid on Lawrence, Kansas, there will be a special tour of the Black Jack Battlefield. It will be conducted by Kerry Altenbernd as John Brown, assisted by members of the 13th Kansas Infantry Reg. reenactor group serving as his civilian Free State militia. Maybe a few proslavery men will be there too.  
The reenactors will be camping on site, so come out early and visit with them.

Obituary: Betty Lou Dobbs

Memorial services for Betty Lou Dobbs will be at 2 pm Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with the Rev. Angela Lowe officiating.
Betty Lou Dobbs, 85, passed away on May 22, 2017 at The University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, surrounded by her loving family.
Betty Lou Dobbs
She was born Betty Lou Warner on July 10, 1931 in El Dorado, Kansas. She moved with her parents, Albert and Gladys Warner to Wichita, KS and attended East High School in Wichita. She worked as a Dental Assistant for many years and was also a homemaker and raised three children.
She met the love of her life, Larry Joe Dobbs Sr, and was married to him on January 22, 1950, at the home of her parents in Wichita. They were happily married for 62 years until his death on December 10, 2012.
She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert Warner and William Warner.
She is survived by her son, Larry Joe Dobbs, Jr (Ruth) of Chocowinity, NC and two daughters, Deborah Miller (Gary) of Sunrise Beach, MO and Angie Black (Kevin) of Baldwin City, KS. She also had 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. God speed, Betty Lou.

Obituary: Stephen and Alison Bauer

Mass of Christian Burial for Stephen Lee Bauer, 75, and Mary Alison (Daugherty) Bauer, 56, of Baldwin City, Kansas, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 29, 2017 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence. Burial will be held at a later date at Rosebud Cemetery in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.  Steve and Alison passed away in a car accident on Friday, May 19, 2017 in Anderson County, Kansas.
Steve was born December 7, 1941 in Sycamore, Illinois, the son of Cyril Oliver and Virginia Mae (Cornwall) Bauer and Alison was born November 4, 1960 in Beaumont, Texas, the daughter of Joseph Peter and Catherine Anne (Evans) Daugherty. Steve became an Eagle Scout and went on to receive his B.A. from Iowa State University in 1967.  Alison received her B.A. from the University of Kansas in 1984.
Steve married Patricia Ann Seratt October 4, 1963 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.  She preceded him in death October 10, 1995. Alison was previously married to Michael Gerstner in 1983. Steve and Alison were married July 15, 1998 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

Survivors include Alison’s parents, Joseph and Catherine, Marietta, Georgia; Steve and Alison’s children Shawn Bauer (spouse Vickie) of Phoenix, Arizona; Tim Bauer (spouse Rachel) of Washougal, Washington; Stephanie (Bauer) Brennan (spouse David) of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Brian Gerstner (spouse Christine) of Lenexa, Kansas; Catherine Gerstner and Shannon Gerstner, both of Lawrence, Kansas; eleven grandchildren, Matthew Bauer (spouse Raeann), Emma Bauer, Patricia Brennan, Henry Brennan, Chase Bauer, Stephen Brennan, Chloe Bauer, Ryan Brennan, Jacob Bauer, Oliver Brennan and Ava Bauer; Steve’s siblings, Michael Bauer, Thomas Bauer, Susan Thorup, Mary Dandurand; and Alison’s siblings, Joseph Daugherty, Jr, Coleen Hosack, Susan Bragg, Jean Leapley, and Michael Daugherty; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Steve was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Laurie Todd.
Steve and Alison were beloved members of the Baldwin City and Lawrence communities. They operated Bauer Inspection and Consulting Services for over twenty years. Steve’s civic contributions include serving as a Baldwin City Councilman since 2015; the Baldwin City Planning Commission; President of James L. Collins Catholic School Board in Corsicana, Texas and City Councilman in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Alison was on the Baldwin City School Board for ten years serving as President for four. Alison actively supporting numerous causes dear to her heart, most recently Mom’s Demand Action for Gun Sense.
Steve and Alison were avid Jayhawk fans. They were both active volunteers supporting the Baldwin City Habitat for Humanity Project. Steve’s passions included fishing, woodworking, classic cars, and his family. Alison loved to read, travel abroad, host friends and family, and was a devoted wife and mother. They often opened up their home to celebrate any occasion. Steve and Alison had a generosity of spirit that will forever touch all who knew them.
A Rosary will be recited at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28th with a visitation to follow until 5 p.m. at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made in their names to Habitat for Humanity and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, Kansas 66044
