Number 10 Baker Opens Heart Play with 68-61 Win over Avila

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The number 10 ranked Baker University women’s basketball team opened up Heart of America Athletic Conference play with a 68-61 win over Avila University on Wednesday night inside the Collins Center.

The Wildcats move to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the Heart, while Avila falls to 1-4 and 0-1.

Courtney Hoag had a big night in the paint for the ‘Cats with eight points and eight blocks, along with eight rebounds.

Jodi Adkins led Baker in scoring with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and Caitlin Modesett had a team-high four assists.

Also in double figures was Jessica Zweifel with her 15 points and she was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line and she hit a late three-point field goal with a minute to go in the game to ice the contest for BU.

Avila led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, then Baker responded with a 26-12 second quarter.

After the break, Avila put together another strong effort in the third, outscoring BU, 21-15, before a 17-17 fourth quarter.

Defensively, Baker caused 13 turnovers and held the Eagles to just 36.5-percent shooting and 4-of-19 from three-point range, good for just 21.1-percent.

The Wildcats went 14-of-17 from the free-throw line and outrebounded Avila, 31-30. Eight of those were offensive rebounds for Baker, with four coming from Hoag.

The ‘Cats will next hit the road on Saturday to face Culver-Stockton at 2 p.m. in Canton, Missouri.

Opinion: At the Rail - Kobach's Corruption Charges Challenged

Okay, would everyone who by now is getting tired of turkey sandwiches raise their hand?  And, while we’re at it, would everyone who is tired of those aimless charges of “government corruption” raise their hand?

Well, that second question has apparently got but one elected official in the state with a hand in the air.

And those elected officials, or at least those who manage the affairs of the Kansas Legislature, are tired of being referred to as corrupt in political speeches—primarily those made by Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who, after two terms in that office, is seeking the Republican nomination for governor next year.

Kobach uses the corruption phrase in most of his speeches and in campaign material, and lawmakers have had enough of it. The implication is that nearly everyone who isn’t Kobach is corrupt.

So…the Legislative Coordinating Council made up of the top leaders of the Kansas Senate and the Kansas House of Representative decided last June to write a stern letter to Kobach to tell him to either identify corrupt government leaders or quit using that phrase.

It’s literally a “put up or shut up” order to Kobach, and a stern letter to that point was delivered to Kobach’s office last week.

The idea: Legislative leaders don’t like corruption, either, and if Kobach is going to continue to toss around that politically charged term, they want him to identify the wrongdoings by the governor and his cabinet, the Legislature and lobbyists who Kobach considers corrupt.

They want the names, and the actions that Kobach believes are corrupt, or at least shaky enough that he can make specific assertions of corruption, not just toss around that word and encourage voters to believe that the government they elected and the people who run it are corrupt.

To get specific, if Kobach has a real assertion of corruption in the governor’s office, the legislative leaders want him to present those assertions to the attorney general; corruption in the Legislature to legislative leaders, and corruption in lobbying to the Governmental Ethics Commission.

Hmmm…

Yes, it is a “put up or shut up” order, one that might make the upcoming election cycle a little politer, or, if Kobach does come up with specific allegations of corruption, then a little more exciting.

The problem for lawmakers and Kobach is that “corrupt” is a pretty broad term. Vote for a tax increase? That’s probably corrupt to everyone who has to pay more, or more than the rest of the people who pay more. Vote for a highway exit ramp in your House or Senate district? Probably corrupt if the adjoining House or Senate district residents want a convenient exit ramp and didn’t get it. Hire a relative or campaign contributor as an assistant or deputy secretary of something or other and that could be labeled corruption.

Yes, you can spread corruption to about any action that you don’t personally like, not just actions that are a violation of state law or some obscure rule or regulation that the state enforces.

Now, just how Kobach is going to respond to that personalized “quit saying corrupt unless you can prove it” missive is unknown. And does that apply to everyone running for public office and should candidates be watching their language, too?

Or, of course, Kobach could just quit saying “corrupt” and maybe just call the leaders and employees of state government something else. Short? Left-handed? Orange?  We’ll see, won’t we?

Kansas National Guard Unit Assists Puerto Rico Recovery

Soldiers of the Kansas National Guard’s 242^nd Engineer Company have kept busy over the past several weeks assisting authorities in Puerto Rico with recovery operations from Hurricane Maria.

The unit’s first mission tasked 16 soldiers skilled in heavy hauling to support operations in Aguadilla on the western coast. Heavy rains during the hurricane caused water to overflow Guajataca Lake Dam and washed out the bottom of the earthen structure. Their mission, coordinated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, moved rock from a nearby quarry to repair the dam and return its reservoir to service.

The remaining personnel began clearing the roadways in the mountainous region near Utuado and Aricebo. Rainfall and high winds caused mudslides, downed trees, and power lines, and undermined roads. The 242^nd engineers used heavy equipment to push debris off roadways, remove dangerous overhangs, and clear passage for locals and agencies providing service to remote areas.

Engineers have been working on debris removal and improvement along Route 111, a major highway in the western half of the island, and along Route 123, which leads into Ponce on the island’s south-central coast. The operation along Route 111 is expected to be completed within the next 48 hours and reconnaissance is being conducted of Route 157 in the central and eastern part of the island to make improvements to this route. Recon missions are also being conducted on Routes 608 and 615.

The soldiers are also supporting local schools with cleanup and debris removal from playgrounds, as time permits.

“To see a child playing there again, that would make my day,” said Capt. Kevin Hubbard, company commander.

Approximately 60 soldiers of the 242nd Engineer Company, augmented by soldiers from other engineer units, departed Nov. 7 to relieve a National Guard unit from another state. They are expected to be in Puerto Rico for 30 days.

The mission was arranged by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, a multistate, mutual aid agreement that facilitates interstate assistance in response and recovery operations during a disaster.

Number 12 Columbia (Mo.) Upsets Number 5 Baker, 1-0, in NAIA Second Round

DELRAY BEACH, Florida – The number 12 seeded Columbia College men’s soccer team upset number 5 Baker, 1-0, in the Second Round of the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship at Seacrest Soccer Complex on Monday afternoon.

The Wildcats end their 2017 campaign with a record of 16-5-2, while Columbia moves onto the National Quarterfinals and will face Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Wednesday at 10 am CST.

The Cougars attempted 19 shots on the day with six on goal, while Baker attempted seven with two on goal.

Joe Houlihan led the way with three shots, while Joah Hickel and Blake Levine took the two shots on goal.

Alberto Ciroi ended the match with five saves, while Nicolau Neto had two saves in the shutout victory.

The lone goal came from Aaron Noel in the 54^th minute, as he received a free kick from Pere Adrian Servera just outside the box and sent it past Ciroi.

Columbia also defeated the Wildcats in the NAIA Second Round in the 2015 NAIA National Championship in Delray Beach, Florida.

This marked Baker’s 10^th appearance in the NAIA National Championship tournament and is now 6-9-1 all-time at the event.

The Cougars improve to 19-2-2 on the season and advance to its second-ever National Quarterfinals.

Lieutenant Governor Jeff Colyer Announces the Appointment of Gina Meier-Hummel as Secretary of the Department for Children and Families

Lieutenant Governor Jeff Colyer announced the appointment of Gina Meier-Hummel, of Lawrence, Kansas, as the new Secretary of the Department for Children and Families (DCF) at a press conference on Wednesday. Meier-Hummel will replace out-going Director Phyllis Gilmore, who announced her retirement earlier this month.

Gina has had an impressive career dedicated to child welfare and human service administration. She brings to the job a tremendous breadth of experience and institutional knowledge gained during her two decades of experience in the field,” said Lieutenant Governor Colyer. “It is critical that the leader of DCF is not only a professional with a demonstrated passion for these issues but also an individual who will challenge the status quo and demand excellence at every level of the agency’s work. Gina is that person.”

Gina Meier-Hummel has served as the executive director of the nonprofit, The Shelter Inc., since 2015. Before that, she worked as the Commissioner of Community Service and Programs at the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services. She also served as the Director of Children and Family Services, Prevention and Protection Services. Meier-Hummel has served on a variety of boards and task forces, including as a member of the Child Welfare Task Force, Commissioner of the Governor’s Mental Health Task Force, Chair of the Governor’s Subcabinet on Behavior Health, a member of the Social Services Policy Council as well as on the steering committee for KanCare.

In 1998, Kansas moved from an entirely state-run foster care system to a privatized system that relied on contractors to perform certain roles. Meier-Hummel has experience in nearly every facet of children and family services, having served, on the state, non-profit, oversight and contractor sides.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve as the new Secretary of the Department for Children and Families here in Kansas,” said Meier-Hummel. “My career has been dedicated to helping the most vulnerable citizens of our state and I am ready to bring that experience to DCF to ensure that we face all challenges head-on. We must provide a voice for the children of our state and vigorously fight to guarantee them a fulfilling life full of love and the promise of a bright future. I intend to do what is right for the children and families of our state. I will take an active role in all levels of this department, making certain that policies are followed and our children’s health and safety is the top priority.”

I grew up in a small town. Slow and undependable Internet access was simply a way of life. It wasn’t until I went away to KU that I realized how much I had been missing. 

Broadband connectivity is a 21st-century necessity. Communities without reliable access have no way to keep up with our rapidly changing world, and this inequality must be addressed. 

Connect Americans Now is a new coalition that has been formed with the support of leading technology and telecommunication companies. The coalition has found a way to use existing infrastructure to extend high-speed broadband to rural areas through TV white spaces. 

For this initiative to be successful, there needs to be public sector support. Specifically, the FCC needs to ensure the continued use of at least three channels below 700 MHz on an unlicensed basis in every market in the country. There is also a need for federal and state infrastructure investments. In addition, the FCC can improve its data collection on rural broadband coverage. 

Private sector capital investment, coupled with public sector support, can solve rural broadband inequities. Senator Moran and Roberts need to get behind efforts to push governmental funding and FCC support.

Baker Mens Soccer Advances to NAIA Final National Championship Site

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The No. 5 ranked Baker University men’s soccer team competed in its fifth-straight NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship Opening Round match and defeated Grace (Ind.) 2-1 to advance to the final site of the National Championship.

The Wildcats improve to 16-4-2 on the year, while the Lancers end its season at 12-5-4.

The Wildcats will now face No. 12 ranked Columbia College on Monday, Nov. 27 at 12:30 p.m. CST/1:30 p.m. EST in Delray Beach, Florida. The Cougars are 18-2-2 on the year.

These two squads last met in this round in 2015 in Delray Beach, Florida with the Cougars winning, 2-0, on November 30, 2015.

This marks the third time in the last five years Baker has advanced to the NAIA Final Site, the others came in 2013 and 2015 in that span.

Joseph Houlihan scored first for Baker in the 27^th minute, as Joah Hickel placed a perfect ball in front of the box and Houlihan popped it up past keeper Kurt Hamlin.

Then Steeve Pouna was tackled inside the box and the Lancers were called for the foul, sending Blake Levine in for a penalty kick.

Levine delivered and gave Baker the 2-0 lead. Levine and Houlihan are now tied for the team lead in goals scored with 10.

Grace cut into the Baker lead in the 74^th minute, as Breno Oliveira was true on his penalty kick past keeper Nick Riggle for the goal.

Alberto Ciroi played the first 64 minutes in goal for the ‘Cats, then Riggle finished off the final 26 minutes.

BU outshot the Lancers, 14-11, and attempted six shots on goal, while Grace had four. Riggle finished with two saves, while Ciroi had one.

Number 12 Georgetown Ends Number 6 Baker Football's 2017 Season

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The number 6 ranked Baker University football team ended its 2017 season on Saturday in a 36-33 loss against number 12 Georgetown (Ky.) snapping Baker’s 14-game home winning streak.

The Wildcats end the year, 10-2, while Georgetown improves to 9-1 overall and will play in the NAIA Football Championship Series Quarterfinals next Saturday, November 25.

This marked Baker’s fifth appearance in the NAIA-FCS in the past six years and 16^th overall appearance.

The Georgetown offense held Baker to 282 yards of offense, its lowest of the season, while the Tigers accumulated 354 yards.

2017 Heart South Offensive Player of the Year JD Woods began the game with a bang, as he took a Logan Brettell pass 83-yards on the first play from scrimmage to give Baker the 7-0 lead.

Then Clarence Clark nailed a 38-yard field goal to give BU the early 10-0 lead. NAIA-FCS Offensive Player of the Game Daric Pugh then scored on a 20-yard TD with 7:39 to go to give the ‘Cats a 10-7 lead.

Quarterback Riley Hall then ran a 1-yard TD in for a score with 6:09 to play in the first half to give GC its first lead at 14-10.

Clark knocked in another field goal from 36-yards out and Abram Garcia followed that up with a 43-yard field goal to give BU the lead back with 11:32 to go in the second quarter.

On Baker’s next possession 2017 Heart First Team All-Southern Division QB Brettell threw a pick-six to Gernell Jenkins and he took it 15-yards for the score to give the Tigers a 20-16 lead, as Nate McLaurin blocked the PAT.

Woods then ran a TD 20-yards to give the ‘Cats a 23-20 lead and Garcia nailed his second field goal of the day from 35-yards out to give Baker the 26-20 lead at halftime.

In the first possession of the second half, Georgetown pieced together a strong drive and Bart Bell received a pass from Hall from 17-yards out and skirted into the end zone to give the Tigers a 27-26 lead.

With 6:23 to go in the third quarter, McLaurin blocked his second kick of the game, this time a field goal and Grant Elston took it the distance for a 79-yard TD to give the ‘Cats a 33-27 lead.

But the Tigers would score the final nine points of the game on a Kyle Longworth 8-yard TD run and a safety to capture the 36-33 victory.

This marked the first time these two teams had ever met in the history of their storied programs.

Brettell started for the ‘Cats at QB for the first time since October 21 and went 8-of-19 for 142 yards and a TD. He will go down as arguably the greatest quarterback in the history of the program. As he holds school records in nearly every major offensive category.

Clarence Clark ends his illustrious career as the NAIA’s all-time leading scorer and the Wildcats’ top wide receiver in the history of the Wildcat football program.

Clark had four catches for 50 yards on Saturday and earned First Team All-Conference in all four years as a Wildcat.

Pugh finished the game with 30 carries and 172 yards to lead the way for the Tigers and Hall threw for just 69 yards on 8-of-25 passing.

Indie Allen led all players on the field with ten tackles and Hayden Jenkins picked off the third pass of his BU career.

Three-time defending Heart South Co-Defensive Player of the Year Josh Kock ends his career with 27 career sacks.

Obituary: Earle Brown

Earle passed away on 11/14/2017 due to complications from throat cancer. Though Earle never smoked, he had two kidney transplants, and that weakened his immune system and made him more susceptible to other ailments.

Earle appreciated every day and was a joy to all around him. He was always cheerful and had an amazing sense of humor.

Earle graduated from Washburn University then moved to Wichita in 1980 to become a sportscaster for KWCH Channel 12. After three years with Channel 12, Brown entered the business telephone equipment industry with Tele-Systems Inc. While continuing to work part-time in the media for 14 years, including seven years for The Wichita Eagle, Brown became President of Tele-Systems.

Earle had two careers in Wichita: his first was in the sports media for 20 years and he was in the business telephone equipment industry for 20 years.

Earle had a passion for sports, especially golf and KU basketball. He was an avid KU fan as well as loving the Royals and the Chiefs. Earle also loved dancing with his wife, Steph. They met dancing and spent many years taking lessons.

He is survived by, as he always liked to joke, his three “much older” sisters, Camilla, Cathy, and Ellen as well as many nieces and nephews.

Earle has two beloved children, Reed (Abbygail) Brown, 32, who lives in Wichita and works in the aircraft industry, and Kelsey Brown, 29, a traveling nurse currently in Connecticut.

Earle also has a wonderful spouse, Stephanie Davis, and loved her many pets. He also leaves behind two step-children, Ariel Davis and Maeson Davis.

He will be greatly missed by all of us.

The gathering will be held Friday, November 17 from 5-6:30pm at Aldersgate United Methodist Church a short service will follow. Graveside services will be held Monday, November 20 at 11am at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa, KS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stephanie Davis Donation Account via Skyward Credit Union, 4 Cessna Boulevard, Wichita, KS 67215, for medical expenses. The family encourages everyone to attend in KU attire.
