Number Seven Baker Claims Third Heart-South Division Title with 26-6 Win over Number 23 Evangel

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. The number seven ranked Baker University football team won their third straight Heart of America Athletic Conference South Division title, defeating number 23 Evangel on Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Missouri by a final of 26-6.

The ‘Cats now improve 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the Heart Southern Division, while Evangel stands at 7-4 overall and 4-1 in Heart south division play.

Baker jumped out to an early lead as stand out freshman running back JD Woods rushed for a 31-yard touchdown to give the ‘Cats a 7-0 lead just one minute and 47 seconds into the game.

In the second quarter, Abram Garcia converted on field goal attempts of 40, 39, and 38 yards to give Baker a 16-0 halftime lead.

Evangel’s Derek Roberts cut the Baker lead to 10 points in the third quarter when he converted two field goal kicks of 34 and 31 yards. After Roberts’ second made field goal, Baker held a 16-6 lead with 7:50 remaining in the third quarter.

39 seconds later Baker responded when freshman quarterback Marco Aguinaga found Clarence Clark for a 60-yard touchdown pass to push the Baker lead to 23-6.

Garcia added the final touches on the game when gave Baker a 26-6 lead, converting his fourth field goal attempt on the afternoon from 22 yards out with 13:00 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Baker offense recorded 465 yards of total offense on the afternoon, with 206 yards rushing, and 259 yards passing.

JD Woods led rushing attack with 111 yards on 13 attempts, while Nate Pauly was close behind with 99 rushing yards on 13 attempts.

Clarence Clark recorded 120 yards receiving on nine receptions and a touchdown, while quarterback Marco Aguinaga went 26 of 38 with 259 yards passing and a touchdown.
On the defensive side Landon Decker recorded two sacks, and both Grant Elston and Nate McLaurin grabbed an interception each.

The Wildcats have now earned a berth into the NAIA-FCS Playoffs for the fifth time in six years and will see who they play next Saturday in the First Round on the NAIA Selection Show this Sunday at 4 p.m.
