BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Missouri Valley football team ended number two Baker University’s 26-game Heart of America Athletic Conference winning streak on Saturday afternoon, with a 27-22 win in Marshall, Missouri.
The Wildcats move to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Southern Division, while Missouri Valley improves to 5-5 and 3-1 in the conference.
This marks the Wildcats first loss to a Heart foe since September 26, 2015, at Benedictine.
The Wildcats racked up 551 total yards of offense and allowed just 234 total yards to the Vikings.
But quarterback Marco Aguinaga was sacked six times on the day and went 30-of-54 for 347 yards and one touchdown and one interception. Those 54 attempts are the most by a Baker quarterback in any game in BU football history.
He connected with Nick Snider 18 times on the day for 173 yards. Those 18 receptions also are a Baker record for most receptions in a game, as it breaks Jimmie Rose’s record of 14 receptions in a game back in 1993.
The Wildcat offense had 108 total plays on offense, compared to just 64 for the Vikings. JD Woods also had a busy day for Baker with 40 rushing attempts for 214 yards and a touchdown.
Clarence Clark began the day for Baker with a 25-yard field goal make with 7:25 to go in the 1st quarter.
Elton Taylor then answered on the next kickoff with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 7:09 left in the first quarter to give the Vikings the lead, which they would never relinquish.
Kenny Sanford then scored on a Jake Bridges pass from 15-yards out to give the Vikings a 13-5 lead. On the PAT, Nate McLaurin blocked it and took the ball all the way to the end zone for a two-point conversion for Baker, making the score 13-5.
Abram Garcia then connected on a 21-yard field goal just before halftime to bring the score to 13-8.
With 2:18 to go in the 3rd quarter, Sanford scored his second touchdown of the day from 1-yard out, to give MVC a 20-8 lead.
Woods recorded his only touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter from three-yards out with 11:33 left in the game to bring the count to 20-15 in favor of MVC.
Then Missouri Valley put together another big play, as Bridges found Dorian Stanard on an 80-yard pass with 7:50 to go in the game, to give the Vikings a 27-15 lead.
With 56 seconds to go, Aguinaga connected with Mason McCormick on a 20-yard touchdown pass to bring the final total to 27-22 in favor of Mo Valley.
Baker picked off two passes on the day, as Clay Drouillard and Grant Elston earned those two interceptions. Indie Allen led the team in tackles with 10.
Baker still has a shot at another Heart South Division crown, as they travel to Springfield, Missouri next Saturday, November 11 to take on number 25 ranked Evangel at 12 p.m.
