BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The number 2 ranked Baker University football team kept its record perfect on Saturday, as they had its first comeback victory of the season Saturday, defeating number 9 Missouri Valley College, 31-28 to move to 10-0.
Cornell Brown scored the game-winning touchdown for the Wildcats after getting the ball with less than 2:00 remaining in the game. Brown finished with two rushing touchdowns, along with 64 yards from scrimmage.
The Wildcats scored the first 10 points of the game, scoring on the first possession after Logan Brettell hit Quanzee Johnson for a 44-yard touchdown pass on the first drive of the game. On the next Wildcat drive, Clarence Clark hit a 37-yard field goal.
The Vikings offense responded following the field goal, leading a 62-yard drive that ended in a Missouri Valley touchdown, cutting the Wildcats’ lead to 10-7.
The Wildcats picked off Vikings quarterback Jake Bridges twice in the first half, the first by Darrian Winston resulting in an 85-yard touchdown drive to put the Wildcats up 17-7. Brown scored his first touchdown late in the first half, bringing the lead to 24-7 with under three minutes to go.
Missouri Valley was able to answer before halftime, scoring on a quarterback keeper by Bridges, bringing the halftime score to 24-14. The Vikings quarterback had 66 rushing yards on the game.
Down 28-24 with 1:54 remaining, the Wildcats drove 68 yards in the Wildcats’ final offensive possession, capped off by Brown’s touchdown.
The Wildcats are now 10-0 on the season, 4-0 in the Heart South Division. They will look to finish the regular season undefeated when they take on Evangel University at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at Liston Stadium for senior day. The game will be broadcast worldwide on ESPN 3.
If the Wildcats win it would be Baker’s third conference title in the past four years and would qualify for the NAIA FCS Playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons.
Avery Parker and Kharon Brown led the team with 10 tackles and Brown had two sacks on the day. Adams also had a sack, as did Akim Francis.
Damon Nolan had a big day receiving with eight catches for 113 yards and the Wildcats racked up 405 yards of offense.
Baker has now won three of its last four meetings against the Vikings and will look to become the first team in Baker history to go 11-0 in the regular season.
