INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The No. 6 seeded Baker University women’s basketball team again made history on Friday afternoon, as they defeated No. 2 seeded Shawnee State (Ohio), 70-56, and advanced for the first time in program history to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship.
The Wildcats will next take on the winner of No. 4 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) and No. 8 Cumberland (Tenn.) in the NAIA quarterfinals on Saturday, Mar. 19 at 4 p.m. inside the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena
With the win, Baker moves to 26-8 overall, while the Bears end their season, 29-6. This also marked win No. 100 in head coach Ben Lister’s career at Baker. The 5th year head coach at BU is now 100-61 for the Wildcats.
Baker’s defense was stifling, as they held the Bears to just 26.2-percent shooting on 16-of-61 and outrebounded Shawnee State, 54-42.
Jami Hodge again had a big game for the Wildcats with 22 points, and her 52 combined points in the first two games of the National Championship are the most in tournament history by a Baker Wildcat. BriAnna Garza scored 49 total points in the 2013-14 National Championship in Frankfurt, Ky.
Macy Wallisch had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds and Ericka Simpson added 10 points.
Sydney Buchel did a terrific job on Ali Zieverink who leads the nation in scoring at 22.7 points per game. Zieverink finished the game with six points on 2-of-15 shooting.
The Wildcats had 15 assists on its 23 field goals, and Buchel led the team with five, while Simpson had four.
