Amazon announced Thursday plans to open a new shipping fulfillment center in Edgerton, Kansas at 19645 Waverly Road. The new 800,00 square-foot plant is expected to bring 1,000 jobs to the city of 1,700 people (680 household). Amazon said employees will pick, pack and ship large items such as big-screen televisions, sports equipment or kayaks.
Another facility in Lenexa is also operated by Amazon. Full-time employees will receive "competitive hourly wages and a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, 401(k) and company stock awards starting on day one, as well as generous maternity and paternity leave benefits," according to a press release from the company.
Governor Sam Brownback said, “This is good news for Kansas."
Upon hearing the news a number of area residents said that they would be interested in working for the shipping giant. Those in the Baldwin City, Edgerton, Eudora or Wellsville areas can apply for jobs at the new facility by visiting Amazon's website.
