BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University baseball team split its Heart of America Athletic Conference opening doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, as they won game one, 3-2, and then fell to Graceland, 5-4, in 10 innings.
Baker moves to 7-11 overall and 1-1 in the Heart, and Graceland now stands at 7-16 overall and 1-1 in the Heart as well.
In game one, Seth Jones got the win and threw another complete game seven innings with six strikeouts and allowed just two hits.
Baker had five hits in the game, all singles and Austin Bass, Wes Summers and Neal Boyce all knocked in one RBI each. Boyce had the ‘Cats only stolen base.
The Wildcats trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the 7th inning, but Jesse Hutmacher scored on a Yellowjacket error and the ‘Cats won on the walk off on a Bass single that scored Boyce.
In game two, Baker again trailed late in the 9-inning game, and sent the game to extra’s with a Marcus Jones sacrifice fly that scored Cort Brennan.
But the Jackets scored in the top of the 10th on a passed ball that scored Colton Ranney.
Justin Bye got the start and threw 5.2 innings of work, while Wes Boehm came in relief late in the game in the 10th inning and got the loss for the ‘Cats.
Bass went 3-for-5 to lead Baker, while Charlie Coleman went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Wildcats will next take on Missouri Valley on Saturday, Mar. 19 at 1 p.m. in Marshall, Missouri.
