INDEPENENCE, Mo. – The Number 6 seeded Baker University women’s basketball team advanced to Tuesday night’s NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship game with a 50-34 win over Number 5 Benedictine on Monday night in the Fab Four.
The Wildcats will next take on the winner of Number 2 MidAmerica Nazarene vs. Number 6 Pikeville on Tuesday, Mar. 22 at 6:30 p.m. inside the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
With a win on Tuesday, this team could be the first to ever win a team national championship in the history of Baker Athletics.
The Wildcats were red hot in the first half, shooting 55.5-percent from the field and 6-of-13 from three-point range and they had 10 blocks in that first frame.
Three-time defending Heart of America Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year Macy Wallisch ended the night with four blocks, as did Sydney Buchel.
Ericka Simpson had one of the best games of her career with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting and 3-of-5 from behind the arc.
No other Wildcat scored in double figures, but Kelsey Larson added nine and Jami Hodge scored seven.
Baker and Benedictine each had 37 rebounds, and the Wildcats held 2014-15 Heart Player of the Year Chayla Rutledge to zero points.
The Baker defense held the Ravens under 10 points in the first three quarters, allowing Benedictine to score just seven in the first, eight in the second and six in the third quarter.
The Ravens shot just 11-of-50 from the floor, 22-percent and 4-of-14 from three-point range, 28.6-percent.
