OLATHE, Kansas – For the first time since the 1996 season, the Baker University football team defeated rival MidAmerica Nazarene in Olathe, Kansas, as they defeated the Pioneers, 55-34, to move to 8-0 on the year.
The Wildcats are now, 2-0, in the Heart Southern Division, while MNU falls to 4-4 and 1-1 in conference play.
Baker’s offense continued to rack up yards and points like they have all season, as the Wildcats scored over 50 points for the fourth time this season and has now won three of its last four contests against MNU.
The game started off slow for the Wildcats as they trailed 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, but Baker used two 100 yard rushing performances from Adonis Powell and Cornell Brown, as Powell ran for a game-high 109 yards including a 72-yard TD to end the game and Brown rand for 107 yards and three TD’s.
Logan Brettell threw for 412 yards on 25-of-37 passing for four TD’s. He had two 100- yard receivers as well, as Brown had 112 yards receiving for another TD and Clarence Clark had 10 catches for 176 yards and two TD’s.
The Baker offense had 674 total yards, with 262 on the ground and 412 through the air.
Defensively the Wildcats had a fumble recovery from Avery Parker and another interception from Darrian Winston, his seventh this season in eight games.
Akim Francis again led Baker with seven tackles and Nick Becker recorded his third sack of the season.
Nick Shondell and Austin Jackson each had a half sack and Hayden Jenkins had six tackles.
Baker outscored MNU, 41-17, in the second half and allowed just 103 yards rushing to the Pioneers.
The Wildcats hope to move to 9-0 next week, as they travel to Fayette, Missouri to take on Central Methodist at 1 p.m.
