BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The number 2 ranked Baker University football team improved to 7-0 Saturday after defeating Avila University 52-7, the Wildcats move to 15-0 all-time against the Eagles.

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The number 2 ranked Baker University football team improved to 7-0 Saturday after defeating Avila University 52-7, the Wildcats move to 15-0 all-time against the Eagles.
The Wildcats started the scoring on a 36-yard field goal by Clarence Clark to cap off the first possession of the game. That was Baker’s only score of a slow first quarter, where the Wildcats came away with a 3-0 lead.
Baker scored their first touchdown of the game in the opening minute of the second quarter, when Logan Brettell connected with Clark on a 38-yard touchdown pass to put them up 10-0.
The only time the Eagles threatened on offense in the first half, Mikeice Adams picked off a Derek Pugh pass and returned it 64 yards, giving the Wildcats possession at the Avila 16-yard line. The Wildcats converted on the ensuing play on a pass from Logan Brettell to Ladai Shawn Boose.
The Wildcats added another score in the closing minutes of the second quarter to take a 24-0 halftime lead over the Eagles. The Wildcats finished the half outgaining the Eagles 261-165 in total offense, Brettell leading the charge for Baker University with 226 passing yards.
Clark eclipsed 100 receiving yards in the first half, and finished with 101 on the day. His second-quarter touchdown gave him 30 receiving scores in his career, increasing the school record he set earlier this season.
BU followed a 21-point second quarter with a 21-point third quarter, as the Wildcats extended their lead to 45-7. Avila scored its only touchdown of the game at the start of the half, when Demonte McClary scored on a 42-yard touchdown run.
Brettell added two touchdown passes in the quarter, a 50-yarder to Nazayah Brown and a 48-yarder to Boose. Boose finished the game with five catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
The final score of the game came on a 65-yard punt return touchdown by Damon Nolan with 13:53 left in the game. This was Nolan’s third punt return touchdown of his Baker career.
The victory gives the Wildcats a 1-0 record in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Southern Division. They will take on MidAmerica Nazarene University at 2 p.m. October 22, to face the 4-3 Pioneers. MNU defeated Evangel Saturday 52-21, snapping a three-game losing streak.
