Number 20 Benedictine Escapes with win over (RV) Baker


BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The No. 20 ranked Benedictine College women’s basketball team escaped with a 51-48 win over (RV) Baker University, after scoring the final five-straight points to capture the win.

Baker led, 48-46, with 13 seconds remaining, but reigning Heart Player of the Year Chayla Rutledge made a basket and was fouled by Taylor Chase, then knocked in the free-throw to give the Ravens a 49-48 lead.

After an Ericka Simpson missed three-point attempt, BC got the rebound and then knocked down two free-throws to seal the game.

BC is now in sole possession of third-place in the Heart of America Athletic Conference standings at 15-4 and 23-4 overall, while Baker falls to 19-7 overall and 13-6 in the Heart and in sole possession of fourth-place.

Baker ran past BC, 65-48, back on Jan. 20 inside the Collins Center. Two of Baker’s three remaining games will return to the Collins Center, as they host Grand View this Saturday, Feb. 20 and Peru State on Senior Night on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

Sydney Buchel led the way for Baker with 15 points, while Macy Wallisch almost earned another double-double with her eight points and 13 rebounds.

Jami Hodge poured in 13 points and collected four steals, and the Baker defense caused 18 turnovers. Rutledge led all players with her 17 points and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Both teams struggled from the field, as Baker shot 35.4-percent from the field, while the Ravens were held to 37.8-percent.
