BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team swept Southwestern College, 9-6 and 9-1 (5inn.) in its home opening doubleheader on Tuesday (February 16) afternoon.
Baker moves to 4-3 on the season, while Southwestern fell to 1-7. Baker will next compete in Conway, Arkansas at the CMU Meltdown in four games on Friday and Saturday.
The ‘Cats trailed 5-0 in the top of the first inning, then allowed another run in the top of the 6th. But BU rallied off nine-straight runs with four in the third, three in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Olivia Brees threw all seven innings and went scoreless her final five innings, while striking out five batters.
Baker had 10 hits in game one, with multi-hit games from Caitlin Hardgrove, Stephanie Cardona, Ilona Miller and Sloane Brady with two hits apiece.
Hardgrove and Cardona each led the team in RBI with two.
In game two, the Wildcats made quick work of Southwestern, winning by run rule in five innings, 9-1.
Madison Nedved threw all five innings and allowed just one run on seven hits and struck out two batters.
Cardona blasted a home run and knocked in a team-high three RBI. Baker tallied 13 hits in the win and Hannah Tolliver scored two runs.
Eight of the 10 Wildcats that went to the plate in game two got a hit.
