BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – In the biggest match up of the Heart of America Athletic Conference season and the NAIA Game of the Week, number 10 Baker at number 12 Bendictine did not disappoint on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats defeated the Ravens by a final of 64-62, in Atchison Kansas.
With the win, Baker takes sole possession of first place in the conference standings with an overall record of 22-4, and a conference record of 20-2.
For Benedictine, today's loss snaps a 13-game winning streak, as they fall to second in the conference with a 20-6 overall record, and a 19-3 mark in Heart action.
In a game that saw eleven lead changes between the two teams, the 'Cats and Ravens fought all the way to a fourth quarter tie at 62-62.
With the clock ticking down, senior forward Sydney Buchel drove to the basket and was fouled.
In front of a packed arena, Buchel nailed both free-throws to give the 'Cats a 64-62 lead with three seconds remaining.
After a Benedictine timeout, the Ravens attempted a long three for the win as time expired, which was off the mark, giving Baker their ninth-straight conference win.
Kelsey Larson and Anna Hignight were the two 'Cats who scored in double figures on the afternoon, both netting 15 points.
Baker won the rebound battle, 40-36, led by Buchel who grabbed 10 boards.
The 'Cats shot 41.4 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from the three point mark, while holding the Ravens to 37.3 percent shooting.
Baker will next take on rival MNU on Wednesday, February 15 at 5:30 p.m. in Olathe, Kansas.
