BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – With its 69-44 win over Graceland on Wednesday night, the number 8 ranked Baker University women's basketball team captured its second Heart of America Athletic Conference regular season championship in the last four years.
The Wildcats move to 25-4 and 23-2 in the Heart, while Graceland falls to 6-22 overall and 6-19 in Heart play. With its, 73-69, loss against William Penn, number 11 Benedictine fell to 21-4 in Heart play and gave Baker the outright 2017 Heart Conference Championship and number 1 seed in next week's Heart Conference Tournament, its Baker's first conference title since they won it outright in 2013-14.
Baker outscored the Jackets in every quarter, and outrebounded Graceland by 15 rebounds, 53-38, MacKenzie Cook had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Leading the way in scoring for Baker was point guard Jessica Zweifel who scored 14 points and knocked down four three-point field goals.
The Wildcats had 11 different players score in the contest and assisted on 14 of its 21 field goals.
Defensively, Baker caused 17 turnovers and held Graceland to just 21.4-percent from the field and the Jackets made just 12 field goals. Baker held GU to just four points in the first quarter and just 15 points in the entire first half.
No Graceland player scored in double figures. Sydnie Hanson led Baker with four assists.
The Wildcats will next host Grand View on Saturday, February 25 for Senior Day. Baker will honor seniors Kelsey Larson, Sydney Buchel and MacKenzie Cook. Please stick around after the men's game against Grand View at 2 p.m. as the women's basketball team will cut down the nets to celebrate its Heart regular season conference championship.
