INDPENDENCE, Mo. – The No. 6 seeded Baker University women’s basketball upset No. 3 Columbia College (Mo.), 80-71, on Wednesday night in the First Round of the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship inside the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
This marks the second time in three years the ‘Cats have advanced to the second round. As they completed that feat in the 2013-14 NAIA DI Tournament in Frankfurt, Ky.
They will now face No. 2 seeded Shawnee State (Ohio) on Friday, Mar. 18 at 12:30 p.m.
The Bears defeated No. 7 seeded Langston (Okla.), 77-69, in the First Round and moved to 29-5 on the year.
With the win, Baker moved to 25-8 and ended the Cougars season at 27-6. Baker avenged its Nov. 28, 2015 loss to the Cougars earlier this season, when they fell to Columbia, 66-55, inside the Collins Center.
Jami Hodge had the game of her career for the ‘Cats with 30 points and 11 rebounds. She shot 10-of-15 from the floor, 6-of-6 from the free-throw line and hit four three-point field goals.
Offensively Baker had an outstanding game hitting 11 three-point field goals and shot 52.5-percent from the floor.
They also outrebounded the Cougars, 46-34, with three-time defending Heart Defensive Player of the Year Macy Wallisch grabbing 16 boards. She also added six blocks.
Kelsey Larson scored 19 points for the ‘Cats and went 5-of-7 from three-point range. She entered the national tournament as the No. 1 ranked three-point field goal percentage shooter in the country.
Baker saved its best quarter for last, as they outscored Columbia, 25-13, in that final frame.
