Number 12 Baker Football Hosts Culver-Stockton on Family Day

Baker University Sports Press Release:

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The No. 12 ranked Baker University football team looks to bounce back from a home opening day loss to No. 10 Grand View University, as they take on the Culver-Stockton Wildcats this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. inside Liston Stadium. Saturday also marks, family day, for the Baker community.

BU has dominated the all-time series against Culver, posting a 34-4 record heading into today's matchup, including a 67-7 victory last season in Canton, Missouri.

In that contest, running back Nate Pauly recorded two rushing touchdowns on seven carries for 66-yards, making him one of four Wildcats to record a multi-touchdown game.

Linebacker Jake Zieler returns for his sophomore season with the Wildcats, looking to make an impact on the defensive side of the ball. In 2017, Zieler played in 12 games and helped BU rank nationally in eight different defensive statistical categories.

Culver-Stockton is off to an impressive start to its 2018 season, as they have posted a 2-1 record through its first three games, including a 35-22 victory over Central Methodist on September 1st, before falling last week to MNU, 46-20.

Sophomore quarterback Korbin Marcum returns for Culver-Stockon, looking to continue his early season success. Marcum has thrown seven touchdowns to only one interception so far this season and has completed 73-percent of his passes.

Through three games, Culver has 1,210 yards of total offense, averaging 403 yards per game, while the defense has allowed 282 yards per game.

The Baker offense has averaged 319 yards of offense through its first two games and will look to stifle the Culver offense with a strong defensive game plan.

In this matchup of Wildcats, Baker has won 10 of the last 11 games, and have recorded 50 or more points in three-straight matchups, including an 89-27 victory in 2016. In that contest, Baker set a team record for points in a single half with 75.

Baker Football Falls to Grand View in Home Opener

Baker University Sports Press Release

The number nine ranked Baker University football team suffered its first loss of the 2018 season, as the Wildcats fell to number 10 ranked Grand View, 39-17, in its home opener on Saturday afternoon inside Liston Stadium.

Baker falls to 1-1 on the year, and Grand View improves to 1-1. This marks the Wildcats' first loss to the Vikings since they joined the conference prior to the 2015 season.
The Vikings and Wildcats were nearly identical in total offensive yards, with 295 and 293 yards respectively.

BU jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter, as quarterback Brandon Mueller scampered into the end zone from 12 yards out, and Cooper Lee nailed a 25-yard field goal.

The Vikings would respond with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Ben Ferkin to Steve Sarcone, cutting the Baker lead to 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

After a five-yard touchdown run by Ferkin to take a 14-10 lead over BU in the second quarter, the Vikings' defense recorded back-to-back pick sixes. At halftime, Grand View held a 27-10 lead over Baker.

In the third quarter, the Wildcats responded to another Vikings' field goal, when quarterback Marco Aguinaga found receiver Sam Huckabee in the back of the end zone from 16-yards out for the score.

Baker was not able to complete the comeback, as Grand View took the victory, 39-17.
Freshman wide receiver Sam Huckabee had an impressive day for the Wildcats, as he recorded 10 receptions for 135-yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Kegan Shumann led the Baker defense with 14 tackles, including 3.5 for losses and a forced fumble.

Baker will next host Culver-Stockton College on Family Day, next Saturday, September 15 at 1 p.m. inside Liston Stadium.

Baker University partners with Pearson Education

Baker University Press Release

OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS — Baker University announces its unique partnership with Pearson Education, one of the nation’s largest publishing companies, to provide students access to an exclusive, digital environment for eBooks, online tutoring, career support and more.
The exclusive program, Baker 360°, is the only Pearson partnership of its kind to provide a single online resource serving a student’s needs from the first day of class to graduation. The student-centered environment can be easily accessed both inside and outside the classroom. The Baker 360° platform offers a more holistic approach to education by providing online access to eBooks, eLabs, tutoring, essay review, and assistance with resume and cover letters all at the students’ fingertips. This is available to students from the very first day of class, and the cost is included in their tuition and fees.
Baker students come from diverse backgrounds and pursue higher education for a variety of reasons, and the university is committed to their educational success within a single online environment. Baker 360° makes that success more affordable and convenient for all students.
“This is a great opportunity for our students,” said Interim Dean of the School of Professional and Graduate Studies Dr. Emily Ford. “So often, students will spend hundreds of dollars on textbooks or go without the material if they can’t afford it. We want our students to succeed without worrying about the financial burden of course materials. Baker 360° ensures that every one of our students has what they need for success at Baker and beyond.”
Course materials and career guidance are just a part of Baker’s efforts to support students during their education. As a part of the partnership with Pearson, tutoring is available to students 24/7 for every class.
“It’s a service that can work for students throughout their time at Baker,” Ford said. “They can receive help on an assignment for a challenging course or career assistance when writing their resume. It fits each student and their unique needs.”
In addition to eBooks, tutoring, and career support, Baker 360° also provides eLab capabilities as a supplement to class instruction. This allows instructors to provide students more individual, personalized instruction.
“We're looking forward to working with Baker University. We are collaborating with an increasing number of institutions to establish an effective and sustainable affordability model that helps control the overall cost of education and delivers equitable, immediate access to learning materials for all students," said Tom Malek, senior vice president of partnerships at Pearson.

FOOTBALL: Baker to Begin 2018 Ranked Number 9

Baker University Sports Press Release

BALDWIN CITY – For the third-straight season, the Baker University football team enters the season ranked in the Top Ten, as the Wildcats will begin 2018 ranked number nine, as the NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 Preseason Poll was announced on Monday.

The Wildcats began 2016 ranked number five and 2017 ranked number two in the NAIA Coaches' Preseason Polls.

The 16-time Heart of America Athletic Conference Football champions will begin its 2018 season on Saturday, September 1 at 2:30 p.m. against (RV) William Penn in Oskaloosa, Iowa in a game that will be broadcast worldwide by Niles Media on the ESPN App and locally on KSMO-TV.

Also ranked in the Top 25 this week from the Heart includes, number 10 Grand View and number 12 Benedictine. While Evangel, William Penn and Missouri Valley are all receiving votes.

Baker is coming off of its third-straight Heart of America Athletic Conference Southern Division Championship and fourth title in the past five seasons.

Poll Methodology
  • The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences.
  • Each conference is given one rater for every four schools in the league.
  • The Top 25 is determined by a points system based on how each voter ranks the best teams. A team receives 25 points for each first-place vote, 24 for second-place and so on through the list.
  • The highest and lowest ranking for each team (a non-rating is considered a low rating) is removed and the team's ranking will be recalculated with an additional point added to each team for every ballot (including discounted ballots) that the teams appear on.
  • Teams that receive only one point in the ballot are not considered "receiving votes."

Baker Women’s Basketball Hires New Coach

Baker University Sports Press Release

BALDWIN CITY – Baker University athletics is excited to announce the hiring of Justin Rees to become its newest head women’s basketball coach on Friday afternoon.

Coach Justin Rees
Rees brings over 19 years of collegiate coaching experience to Baker, most recently serving as the Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at NCAA Division I Valparaiso for four seasons.

He also served as the head women’s basketball coach at Missouri Valley College for the 2013-14 season, leading the Vikings to the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals. In that season, the Vikings improved its win total by 11 games, posting a 19-13 record under Rees.

"First, I am incredibly honored and excited to be joining Baker University and the women's basketball family,” said Rees. “I would like to thank Athletic Director Nate Houser, Assistant Athletic Director Susan Decker, the rest of the search committee and the athletic department for this opportunity and welcoming me to Baldwin City."

"Baker basketball has a history of success and an expectation to strive for excellence both on and off the court and I look forward to building on those rich traditions. We have a strong foundation already in place and I cannot wait to get to work with our players and staff to grow our family and compete at the highest levels."

Rees has led several players to All-Conference and All-America awards including NAIA Honorable Mention All-American Gabi Morales of Missouri Valley in 2013-14.

While at Valpo, he led seven players to All-Conference awards, including three All-Freshman/Newcomer Team award winners.

“We are very excited to welcome Justin into the athletic family here at Baker University,” said Baker Director of Athletics Nate Houser. “Justin has enjoyed success at all levels during his career as a basketball coach. He is familiar with our state and region, is a champion of student academic success and demonstrated that he understands what it means to run a successful program."

“Justin is a perfect fit to promote and sustain our goal of ‘Building Champions for Life.’ We look forward to sharing in the leadership and experience Justin will bring to Baker University and look forward to the exciting future of the women’s basketball program.”

The Barry University (Fla.) graduate has also included stops in his career as Assistant Coach at NCAA Division II William Jewell, NCAA Division II Ferris State and NCAA Division I Maine.

The Baker women’s basketball team has captured 20-wins in six-straight seasons and have advanced to the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament in four of the last five seasons.

Rees will begin his duties at Baker immediately.

Baker's Blake Levine Signs with Nashville Soccer Club of the USL

Baker University Sports Press Release

BALDWIN CITY – Former Baker University men's soccer standout Blake Levine has signed a professional contract with the Nashville Soccer Club of the United Soccer League (USL).

The Overland Park, Kansas native joins the Nashville club after playing four years for the Wildcats.

"We are really excited for Blake Levine," said Baker head men's soccer coach Nate Houser. "He graduated as a captain and All-American for us and finished as the all-time scoring and assist leader for Sporting Academy Collegiate players. He is very deserving of this opportunity to play at the next level."

Levine helped lead Baker to four NAIA National Championship tournament appearances and scored 32 goals in his career with a career-best 10 goals in 2017. He also had 20 assists in his career.

The 2017 NAIA All-American ended the season with 14 assists leading Baker and ranking No. 5 in the NAIA and his six game winning goals led the squad and also ranked No. 5 nationally.

Levine's signing with Nashville marks the second former Baker Wildcat to sign with a team from the USL in the last two years, as Amer Didic signed with the Swope Park Rangers of the USL in May of 2016, later signing with Sporting KC of Major League Soccer (MLS) in May of 2017.

Levine spent this season with Inter Nashville FC of NPSL. Levine made four appearances for Inter Nashville at the end of its season, scoring twice.
