Baker Softball Opens Heart Play with Split Against Number 5 CMU


BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team opened up the Heart of America Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on Sunday afternoon, as they split its home doubleheader with No. 5 ranked Central Methodist.

The Wildcats won game one, 4-2, then fell to the Eagles, 5-1 in game two. Baker moves to 21-12 overall and 1-1 in the Heart, while the Eagles now stand at 13-11 and 1-1.

In game one, Olivia Brees continued the help carry the Wildcats with her shut out victory. The freshman is now 11-3 in the circle this season.

She went all seven innings and struck out seven batters, allowing four hits. Offensively, Baker had three hits, all-coming from Caitlin Hardgrove, Allie Zahn and Stephanie Cardona.

Zahn had the big hit in game one, with a home run in the bottom of the first inning. Cardona and Cari Vollenweider each drove in a run as well.

In game two, CMU jumped on starter Madison Nedved for two runs in the first inning and one in the second, then added two more in the Top of the 7th. Skyler Hime hit a two-run home run in the first to give the Eagles the early lead.

Offensively, Baker managed two hits with one each from Zahn and Cardona.

Baker will next host MNU on Tuesday, Mar. 22 at 5 and 7 p.m. at Cavaness Field.
