WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Number 10 Baker Wins Fifth-Straight Conference Game


BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The number 10 ranked Baker University women’s basketball team defeated the Missouri Valley College Vikings by a final score of, 80-62, on Monday night and kept its spot atop the Heart of America Athletic Conference standings.

With the win, Baker improves to 18-4 overall and 16-2 in conference play, while Missouri Valley drops to 10-11 and 6-11 in the Heart.

The ‘Cats got off to a hot start as they outscored Missouri Valley 21-12 in the first quarter. The Vikings kept the game close in the 2nd and 3rd quarters with lights out free throw shooting, as they went 27-of-29 on the game for 93-percent.

Kelsey Larson was the leading scorer for Baker on the night with 26 points, she has scored in double figures in four of Baker’s last six games. Larson went 6-of-10 from behind the three-point line and also led the team with seven rebounds.

Sydney Buchel led the team in assists with six, along with grabbing five rebounds, and recording three blocks.

Missouri Valley forward, Deidra McCoy lead the Vikings with 24 points on the night, while going a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line.

As a group Baker shot 50-percent from the field, making eleven three-point baskets.
Defensively, the ‘Cats held the Vikings to 36.6-percent shooting, while also forcing 15 turnovers.

Baker also out-rebounded the Vikings, 36-23 on the night. MacKenzie Cook added six rebounds for the Wildcats and was one of three ‘Cats to score in double figures as she scored 13 and Sydnie Hanson netted 12.

BU is still tied in first-place in the Heart of America Athletic Conference standings with number 15 ranked Benedictine, as each is 16-2 in Heart play.

The Wildcats next matchup will be against Culver Stockton, on Thursday, February 2 at 5:30 p.m. inside the Collins Center.
