PERU, Neb. – The number 14 ranked Baker University women’s basketball team used a quick first quarter start to defeat Peru State College, 83-64, on Saturday.
The Cats’ quick start was led by senior forward Sydney Buchel, as she was perfect from the floor going 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free throw line, scoring 10 points.
She would finish the game with a double-double netting 18 points while also grabbing 10 rebounds. Baker outscored the Bobcats 24-14 in the first quarter.
Three other Cats also scored in double figures on the day, as Mackenzie Cook scored 14 points, along with Anna Hignight and Joanne Lira scoring 10.
Baker’s defense was dominant all afternoon, as they held the Bobcats to 36.8-percent shooting from the field, and forcing 16 turnovers.
The Cats’ also shot 10-of-14 from the free-throw line and dished out 15 assists, led by Joanne Lira who recorded 4.
In the final frame Baker outscored the Bobcats 19-12 closing out their second consecutive victory to start the New Year.
Baker’s next game will be a rematch of last year’s NAIA National Championship game vs. rival MNU on Monday, January 9 at 5:30pm inside the Collins Center.
The Wildcats are 11-3 overall and 9-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference standings, tied for first-place with MNU, who is 10-3 overall and 9-1.
