BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The number 14 ranked Baker University women’s basketball team used a school-record 18 made three-point baskets to upset rival number 5 MNU, 85-60, on Monday evening to move into first-place in the Heart of America Athletic Conference standings.
With the win, the Cats are now atop of the conference by itself with an overall record of 12-3, and 10-1 in Heart action, while the Pioneers fall to 10-4 overall and 9-2 in Heart play.
The first half was dominated by Baker as they went into the break leading MNU 40-21, highlighted by freshman Taylor Smith’s buzzer beater to put the ‘Cats up 19 points at the break.
Baker continued to roll in the second half as they were a perfect 4-of-4 from the field to start the third and fourth quarters.
The Cats’ were led in scoring by junior guard Sydnie Hanson, who was 6-of-7 from three-point range, giving her a total of 20 points for the game. She was just one three-point basket made from tying the school-record in a game.
As a team, Baker held MNU to just 30-percent shooting for the game as well as forcing 11 turnovers.
Baker went an unreal 18-of-29 from three-point range for 62.1-percent and went 31-of-61 from the field for 50.8-percent.
Four other ‘Cats scored in double figures, including 15 from Jessica Zweifel, 12 from MacKenzie Cook, and 10 each from Sydney Buchel and Anna Hignight.
Buchel finished the night with three blocks, six rebounds and two assists.
The ‘Cats will play next Graceland this Thursday, January 12 at 5:30 p.m. inside the Collins Center.
