DES MOINES, Iowa – The number 10 ranked Baker University women’s basketball team defeated the Grand View Vikings by a score of, 79-67, on Monday night.
With the win Baker moves to 15-4 overall, and 13-2 in conference play, while the Vikings fall to 9-10, and 6-9 in Heart action.
Grand View led, 16-14, after the first quarter, but Baker used a big second period outscoring the Vikings, 25-15. Going into the break, the Cats held a 39-31 halftime lead.
Baker continued to increase its lead in the second half, going up by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter.
Down the stretch the ‘Cats shot an impressive 13-of-15 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, putting away the Vikings for their second straight victory.
Sydney Buchel led the ‘Cats in scoring with 20 points, while also grabbing nine rebounds.
Three other ‘Cats made it into double digit scoring as Jessica Zweifel scored 17, Sydnie Hanson netted 13, and Courtney Hoag recorded 10.
The Vikings were led by Maddie Westergard, who scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, giving her a double-double on the night.
The ‘Cats shot 43-percent from the field, and an impressive 84-percent from the free-throw line.
As a team, Baker was able to hold Grand View to 34-percent shooting, while the Vikings had the edge in rebounding over the ‘Cats, 50-37.
Baker will next face Avila University on Wednesday, January 25 at 5:30 p.m. in Kansas City.
