Number 14 Baker Earns Fourth-Straight Win


BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Baker University women’s basketball team continued its run through the Heart of America Athletic Conference on Thursday night, as they defeated Graceland, 78-49, to continue its pace as the top team in the Heart.

With the win, Baker moved to 13-3 overall and 11-1 in Heart play, while the Yellowjackets fell to 3-12 and 3-9 in the Heart. Baker is now in first place all alone in the conference standings, one game ahead of No. 16 Central Methodist and No. 19 Benedictine who are both 10-2 in conference play.

In the first half, the Cats went 6-of-14 from three point range, led by sophomore guard Jessica Zweifel who was 3-of-5 from behind the arc. She would finished the half with 14 points, helping to give the Cats a 38-21 lead at the break.

Anna Hignight and Sydnie Hanson also contributed in the first half, with Hignight scoring nine points, and Hanson netting eight.

The Baker defense continued to dominate as they were able to hold the Yellowjackets to 25.8-percent shooting along with forcing nine turnovers in the first half.

They would finish the game forcing 18 turnovers and kept Graceland at 25.8-percent shooting for the night.

Three Cats scored in double figures on the night as Zweifel and Hignight both scored 16 points, and Hanson finished with 10. Zweifel also dished out five assists and recorded one steal.

As a team Baker shot 43.3-percent from the field, and outrebounded Graceland, 44-33. Hanson and Courtney Hoag led Baker in rebounding with eight each.

Baker will next travel to Grand View on January 16, 2017 in Des Moines, Iowa at 5:30 p.m.
