BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Baker University men’s basketball team led the first 39:56 of Monday’s contest against rival MNU, until David Nelson knocked down a three-point basket with four seconds remaining in regulation to give MNU the 74-73 win on Monday night.
The ‘Cats jumped out to a quick 15-4 lead in the first six minutes of the game, highlighted by two Daniel Young three-point baskets.
The largest lead for Baker was 18 points at the 5:22 mark of the first half.
Collectively, Baker made five three-point field goals to start the first half, as well as forcing six MNU turnovers. At halftime, Baker led MNU, 37-25.
The Pioneers continued to chip away at the lead until they trailed by one with 16 seconds remaining.
Nelson finished the game with 23 points after knocking in that late three-point basket to give the Pioneers the win and Justin Randall scored 25 while also recording 7 blocks.
Junior forward Daniel Young led Baker in scoring with 15 points, while senior guard Tyrome Parker finished the game with 14. The senior also had 10 rebounds, finishing with a double-double.
Baker shot 33-percent from three-point range, while also recording 12 assists and went 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.
With the win MNU moves to 8-7 overall and 7-4 in conference play, while the ‘Cats fell to 8-7 overall and 5-6 in the Heart.
The ‘Cats will next on Graceland this Thursday, January 12 at 7:30 p.m. inside the Collins Center.
