Baker Men's Basketball Gets Season Sweep over Avila


KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The Baker University men’s basketball team defeated Avila University on Monday night by the final score of 60-49 and earned the season sweep over the Eagles.

With the win Baker improves to 11-9 overall, and 8-8 in conference action, while Avila falls to 3-17, and 3-13 in the Heart.

The Baker defense held Avila to just 13 points in the first half and led at the break 23-13.

Junior forward Daniel Young led Baker in scoring with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and 2-of-3 from three-point range. Young also recorded nine rebounds, nearly giving him a double-double on the night.

Baker won the rebounding battle, as they out rebounded the Eagles 42-35. The Eagles were held to just 30.5 percent shooting from the field and only converted on 1-of-15 three-point attempts. 

Javeion Gray led the ‘Cats in assists with five and collectively the ‘Cats shot 16-of-27 from the charity stripe.

Baker nearly had an assist on every field goal made, as the collectively had 18 assists on 19 field goals.

Baker’s next matchup will be on the road vs. number 4 William Penn on Saturday, January 28 at 2 p.m. in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the Statesmen are in first place solely in the Heart standings with its 17-2 overall record and 13-2 conference mark. One of those losses came to Baker back on November 19 in Baldwin City, 88-85.
