BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The number 5 ranked Baker University football team continued its perfect run through the beginning of the 2016 season with a 41-7 win over number 23 William Penn in the NAIA Game of the Week.
The Wildcats move to 3-0 on the season, while the Statesmen fall to 0-3. Baker’s Quanzee Johnson scored the first four touchdown’s of the game for the Wildcats on TD receptions from quarterback Logan Brettell on scores of 96-yards, 33-yards, 3-yards and 31-yards.
Johnson finished the day with five catches for 169 yards and four touchdowns and his QB Brettell went 26-of-35 for 427 yards and five TD passes.
The final two touchdowns of the day went to Cornell Brown on an 18-yard run and Ladai Shawn Boose on a 2-yard TD reception.
Baker accumulated 612 yards of offense and the defense was stifling, holding William Penn to just 200 total yards, 24 of which came through the air.
WPU QB Eric Cooper went 2-of-9 for 24 yards and two interceptions. The two picks came from Avery Parker and Darrain Winston.
Akim Francis led Baker in tackles with 11 and he had a team-high 3.5 tackles for loss. Kharon Brown finished with nine tackles. The Baker defense finished up with eight tackles for loss and Clay Drouillard forced a fumble in which Kegan Schuman recovered.
Baker also racked up 162 rushing yards, as Brown ran for 97, Nazayah Brown rushed for 70 on 14 carries and Brettell ran for five.
This marks the second-straight season Baker has defeated William Penn, they took down the Statesman, 48-13, last year inside Liston Stadium.
William Penn was forced to punt eight times and on 52 rushing attempts, the Statesmen averaged 3.4 yards per rush.
The Wildcats will next take on Graceland University next Saturday, September 17 at 6 p.m. in Lamoni, Iowa
