BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The number 5 ranked Baker University football team had a record-setting day on Saturday, defeating Culver-Stockton 89-27.
Both individual and team records were set, as the Wildcats’ 75 points in the first half broke the 96-year old record of 60, when Baker defeated Bethel 115-0 and scored 60 points in the first half.
Quarterback Logan Brettell’s seven touchdowns through the air, all in the first half, broke Jake Morse’s record of six set in 2013, and Clarence Clark’s 27th touchdown reception gave him the all-time career record in that category.
The scoring started with the second play from scrimmage, as Brettell’s screen pass to Clark went 51 yards for a touchdown. Just 2:28 later, after a fumble by Culver-Stockton, Brettell hit Quanzee Johnson for a 15-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats up 14-0.
Culver’s only score of the first half came on the following possession, as Matt Gunterman hit John Haarman for a 69-yard touchdown. Baker answered almost immediately with a Cornell Brown reception, as the Wildcats took a 21-0 lead.
Two more offensive touchdowns, as well as a blocked punt for a safety and a pick-six by Avery Parker gave Baker a 44-6 lead before the end of the first quarter.
The Wildcats tacked on four more touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter. Brettell was taken out midway through the second quarter, and finished the game 18-of-19 for 329 yards as well as the seven touchdowns.
Adam Lomenick led Baker after that point, putting up 148 yards and two touchdowns passing before halftime. He finished the game 13-of-19 for 174 yards and two touchdowns.
The Wildcats had 547 yards of total offense in the first half compared to 129 for Culver-Stockton. Baker utilized big play on both offense and defense, scoring four 50+ yard touchdowns and forcing seven CS-C turnovers.
C-SC was able to put the first 21 points on the board in the second half as Baker used their reserves, taking the opening possession into the end zone to cut the Baker lead to 75-12 after a failed two-point conversion.
Later in the third quarter, Culver-Stockton put together an eight play, 70-yard drive that ended in a 16 yard touchdown, and on its first drive of the fourth quarter, scored on a 34-yard touchdown to cut Baker’s lead to 75-27.
The Wildcats responded with 14 points of their own with touchdowns from Eli Stout and JR Bryson, bringing the score to its final of 89-27.
Baker improved its all-time record against C-SC to 33-4, and the record under head coach Mike Grossner to 11-2. The Wildcats will take on William Penn University Saturday, Sept. 10 in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
The Statesman are 0-2 on the season, with a pair of one-point losses. The last meeting between the Wildcats and the Statesmen saw Baker come away with a 48-13 victory. The game will be broadcast worldwide on ESPN3.
