Number 5 Baker Storms Back to Beat Number 4 MNU in Day One of Heart Tourney


JOPLIN, Mo. – With Jamaal Rashad standing on third base and two outs, freshman Max Taulbee came up in a 4-4 tie against rival No. 4 MNU and knocked a single past the Pioneer infield to score Rashaad and send No. 5 Baker to a 5-4 win to move on in the 2016 Heart of America Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament.

With the win, Baker moves on to face number 8 Peru State on Friday at 4 p.m. at Joe Becker Stadium in Joplin, Missouri.

Peru State rolled past number 1 Avila, 10-1, to face Baker, while MNU will now face Avila at 10 a.m. in an elimination game.

Baker moved to 23-29 on the season and dropped MNU to 38-14. Baker is now 2-3 against the Pioneers this season.

Peru State and Baker last met on Apr. 16-17 at Sauder Field and Baker swept the Bobcats, 7-2, 4-3, 6-5, 10-3 for its first four-game sweep of any kind since 2006.

Taulbee knocked in the game-winning run, but Gabe Greenbaum, Ethan Jacks and Cort Brennan all had an RBI as well.

Baker had 10 hits, with two each from Wes Summers, Neal Boyce and Taulbee. Seth Jones got the start and went eight strong innings, holding MNU to just three earned runs and struck out five batters.

Kekai Rivera-Albeso kept MNU scoreless in the ninth and 10th innings and got the win.
