Saturday May 7th was a busy day in Baldwin City. The day started out with a free tree giveaway at 8 A.M. in the vacant lot between the post office and Lumberyard Arts Center.
Across the street at the Library, between the hours of 8 A.M. and noon, was the annual Friends of the Baldwin City Public Library spring plant sale. Meanwhile, inside the library, between 9 A.M. and noon,the library was giving away free comic books in conjunction with FreeComicsBookDay.com. Back over on Highway 56 at the southeast corner intersecting with sixth street, was the weekly Farmers Market. The Farmers Market is held every Saturday from April 16 through September 24, between 8 A.M. and noon.
At 9 A.M. we made our way over to 1100 Freemont, Lawrence Habitat For Humanity held it's nail drive ceremony. Beginning the project to build the Bayless family own home. Before construction began, each member of the family took turns driving the ceremonial nails, then raised the first two walls of the new house.
Erika Zimmerman, Executive Director of Lawrence Habitat for Humanity, said the project was expected to take about 16 weeks. Which would mean the house should be finished on or about September 2, 2016.
Culminating the days events the Palmyra Township Fire Department held its annual whole hog dinner fundraiser from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Vinland Fairgrounds in Vinland.
