DES MOINES, Kan. – The Baker University men’s outdoor track & field team captured its sixth-straight Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa on the campus of Grand View University.
Baker has now won Heart titles in men’s outdoor track in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and now 2016.
Head track & field coach Ryan Pitts earned the Heart Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year award, he also won the 2016 Heart Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year in March.
Also earning awards for Baker were senior Dayshawn Berndt who earned the Men’s Track Athlete of the Year award, while freshman Gloria Mares earned the Women’s Track Athlete of the Year honor.
Mares won the 200m race in a time of 25.01 and Berndt took first in the men’s 200m dash in a time of 21.58.
Baker earned 178.5 points, while Graceland took second with 140.5 points.
On the women’s side, Baker finished in fourth place behind first-place Grand View, second-place Benedictine and third-place MNU. Baker had previously won the last four Heart Women’s Outdoor Track & Field championships in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Two Baker men’s athletes broke school records, as Tyler Randall broke the program record in the 800 in a time of 1:54.91, while Jesse Mathews broke the school record in the 400m hurdles in a time of 53.86.
Brenda McCollum took home first in the women’s 5,000m race walk in a time of 27:59.19. Jamie Steury also captured first in the 3,000m steeple chase in a time of 9:55.63.
Josh Peck took home an individual championship in the men’s discus throw with a mark of 51.74m.
