Baker Women Earn First, Men Take Second at BU Golf Spring Invite

SPRING HILL, Kan. – The Baker University men’s & women’s golf teams ended its regular season on Wednesday, as they hosted the Baker Spring Invitational at beautiful Sycamore Ridge Golf Course.

The women’s team took home first place, while the men’s squad finished in second. Senior Lindsey Mateer ended her illustrious regular season career with a first-place finish in her hometown of Spring Hill, Kansas with a 158 two-day score, 14 shots better than the next golfer.

Samantha Mitchell also finished as a medalist with her third-place finish. Six Wildcats finished in the Top 10, including Kaci Dillingham (6^th), Bailey Gibson (7^th), Bailey Rockers (9^th) and Emily Pennington (10^th).

The men’s team finished in second-place behind Evangel. The Wildcats finished 11 shots behind EU.

Alec Wuellner had a strong tournament with a 76 first round score and 77 second round score, to take third, while teammate Grant Grego finished fourth with a 77 and 77.

Also finishing in the Top 10 for Baker was Kyle Barbee who T-9 with a 77 and 84.

Both men’s and women’s teams will next compete at the Heart Championships. The women will compete on May 1-3 at Table Creek Golf Course in Nebraska City, Nebraska, while the men will take on the Heart championship on May 8-10 at Swope Park Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo.

Atwood, Crank and Middleton named NWCA NAIA All-Academic Award Winners

MANHEIM, Pa. – Three members of the No. 6 ranked Baker University wrestling team were named 2016 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) NAIA All-Academic team award winners for their efforts away from the wrestling mat.

The three Wildcats to earn the award include Kyler Atwood, Colby Crank and Connor Middleton.

To be nominated for consideration for the All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.25 grade-point average and be a 2016 NAIA national championship qualifier or have a 3.0 GPA and earned All-American honors at the 2016 championships in Topeka. 

In all, 24 All-Americans comprised the 2015-16 NAIA All-Academic team. Twenty-two different schools had at least one representative on the individual team with 17 of those having multiple All-Academic honorees.

All three Wildcats competed in Topeka, Kansas at the 2016 NAIA Wrestling national championships. Atwood qualified in the 197-pound weight class, while Middleton finished as an All-American taking home fifth-place in the 165-pound class.

Crank became Baker’s third wrestling NAIA national champion, by winning the 157-pound national title. He joined Bryce Shoemaker who won the 133-pound championship in 2014 and Victor Hughes who won the 149-pound title in 2016.

Baker Splits Baseball Home Series with Evangel, Qualifies for Heart Tournament

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University baseball team split its home four-game series with Evangel University over the weekend, as they took the first two games by scores of 6-5 and 15-2 and fell on Saturday, 3-2 and 7-3.

The Wildcats improved to 21-25 overall and 15-13 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while Evangel fell to 15-34 and 7-21 in the Heart.

For just the second time since 1999, Baker has qualified for the Heart of America Athletic Conference tournament and first since 2014.

The Wildcats will compete May 6-10 in Joplin, Missouri at the 2016 Heart Conference Tournament in search of its first Heart title since 1993 for the baseball program.

In game one, Seth Jones threw 4.1 innings and was relieved by Kekai Rivera-Albeso, who threw 2.2 innings of scoreless action and allowed just one hit, eventually receiving the win.

The Wildcats trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the 7^th inning and scored three-straight runs to earn the walk off. Baker won on a Wes Summers single that scored Jamaal Rashad.

Cody Gregory led Baker in the first game, with a 3-for-3 day at the DH spot, while Charlie Coleman, Travis Johnson and Summers each had two hits.

In game two, Baker’s offense exploded for four runs in the first, second and third innings and three in the fifth.

Baker had 14 hits in the victory and 10 different players recorded a hit. Gabe Greenbaum and Max Taulbee had extra base hits for Baker, as Greenbaum hit a triple and Taulbee added a double.

Cort Brennan knocked in four RBI’s and Justin Bye received the win after throwing five innings.

In game three, Caleb Lee threw all seven innings and ended with a loss. He struck out three batters and allowed only one earned run.

Baker had seven hits offensively with three coming from Austin Bass.

In the series finale, Baker tagged the Evangel staff for four hits and Lake Johnson earned the loss.
