Remember to Vote Tomorrow

Kevin Surbaugh

Tuesday, November 7 is election day.  A handful of people turned out for advance voting on Saturday, however, voting was very light.  It is a fact that local voting is historically the lowest turnout of any election, even though local governments could have the most impact on our daily lives.   Local leaders across the state are encouraging residents in city and school board districts alike to turn out in big numbers on Tuesday and vote for their neighbors who will be elected to represent them.
One Baldwin City resident, who voted this past Saturday said, "Let's be proud and vote for what matters to us this year.  Don't let a small minority chose for us."

Emil Liston was the driving force in the creation of the first collegiate basketball national championship tournament.

With the help of his friends, Dr. James Naismith and Frank Cramer, his dream became a reality in March of 1937 when he spearheaded the America’s first national championship at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri.

That tournament eventually became the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball, which morphed into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Liston coached Baker University to Kansas Conference championships in 1930 and 1937 and to national tournament berths in 1937 and 1941.

He continued to coach at Baker until 1945 when he resigned to become the NAIB’s first full-time executive secretary, a position he had held on a part-time basis beginning in 1940.

Liston, who was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975, continues to be honored to this day as the Emil S. Liston Scholarship is awarded annually to one NAIA junior men’s basketball player and one NAIA junior women’s basketball player in recognition for their outstanding academic and athletic excellence.

Small College Basketball services a niche within college basketball, as it unites the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA levels.
Through the creation of the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame, events, awards, the website and various forms of publicity, it pays tribute, honors and promotes college basketball players, coaches, contributors and alumni within the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA levels.  Combined, these levels of college basketball account for nearly 1,200 colleges and universities throughout the United States.
At the heart of Small College Basketball is the people that have made the game of basketball at these levels so very special.
The focus is to enhance the lives of those people by paying special tribute to those who have made great contributions. By doing so, SCB raises the profile of basketball at these levels and enhances the overall game of basketball. Ultimately, Small College Basketball is about people and passion.

Tyler Price, Assistant Director of Athletics | Communications

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Missouri Valley football team ended number two Baker University’s 26-game Heart of America Athletic Conference winning streak on Saturday afternoon, with a 27-22 win in Marshall, Missouri.

The Wildcats move to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Southern Division, while Missouri Valley improves to 5-5 and 3-1 in the conference.

This marks the Wildcats first loss to a Heart foe since September 26, 2015, at Benedictine.

The Wildcats racked up 551 total yards of offense and allowed just 234 total yards to the Vikings.

But quarterback Marco Aguinaga was sacked six times on the day and went 30-of-54 for 347 yards and one touchdown and one interception. Those 54 attempts are the most by a Baker quarterback in any game in BU football history.

He connected with Nick Snider 18 times on the day for 173 yards. Those 18 receptions also are a Baker record for most receptions in a game, as it breaks Jimmie Rose’s record of 14 receptions in a game back in 1993.

The Wildcat offense had 108 total plays on offense, compared to just 64 for the Vikings. JD Woods also had a busy day for Baker with 40 rushing attempts for 214 yards and a touchdown.

Elton Taylor then answered on the next kickoff with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 7:09 left in the first quarter to give the Vikings the lead, which they would never relinquish.

Kenny Sanford then scored on a Jake Bridges pass from 15-yards out to give the Vikings a 13-5 lead. On the PAT, Nate McLaurin blocked it and took the ball all the way to the end zone for a two-point conversion for Baker, making the score 13-5.

Abram Garcia then connected on a 21-yard field goal just before halftime to bring the score to 13-8.

With 2:18 to go in the 3rd quarter, Sanford scored his second touchdown of the day from 1-yard out, to give MVC a 20-8 lead.

Woods recorded his only touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter from three-yards out with 11:33 left in the game to bring the count to 20-15 in favor of MVC.

Then Missouri Valley put together another big play, as Bridges found Dorian Stanard on an 80-yard pass with 7:50 to go in the game, to give the Vikings a 27-15 lead.
With 56 seconds to go, Aguinaga connected with Mason McCormick on a 20-yard touchdown pass to bring the final total to 27-22 in favor of Mo Valley.
