WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Number 12 Baker Defeats Rival Number 14 Benedictine, 69-56

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The number 12 ranked Baker University women’s basketball team moved to 9-2 on the year after defeating number 14 Benedictine College 69-56 Saturday.

Baker is now alone in second-place in the Heart standings at 7-1, while BC falls to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in Heart action. number 3 MNU is 9-1 overall and 8-0 in the Heart.

Anna Hignight led the Wildcats in scoring for the second-consecutive game with 16, following a season-high 18-point performance against Columbia College. Sydney Buchel led in rebounds with seven and added four blocks.

As the third-ranked team in rebounding margin in the NAIA, the Wildcats once again dominated the boards, outrebounding the Ravens 39-29.

The Wildcats led for a majority of the first half, trailing only after the first basket. BU also lost the lead allowing the Ravens to tie the game up at 23-23 in the second quarter, but BU ended the quarter with a 10-5 run.

Baker shot 46.2 percent from the field in the first half and 6-of-8 on free throws en route to a 33-28 halftime lead.

The Baker defense held Benedictine to 37.5 percent shooting in the first half. Kristen Murphy led the Ravens with 11 points in the half, and finished with 18 for the game.

In the third quarter, the Wildcats stretched the lead to nine points, but the Ravens responded with a 9-1 run to make the score 43-42. That is the closest the Ravens got for the rest of the game, as the third quarter ended with a 48-45 Baker lead.

The Wildcats saved their best quarter for last, as they outscored the Ravens 21-11. Holding a four-point lead with 2:39 remaining, the ‘Cats scored eight unanswered points to put the Ravens away. Benedictine was held to their lowest scoring output of the season at 56 points.

Baker’s next game will be a non-conference matchup, hosting Southeastern University at 2 p.m. Monday, December 19.
