BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – After completing its most successful season in program history, the Baker University women’s basketball team continues to reload for the future, as they announced the signing of Julia Bannister a transfer from NCAA Division II Hawaii Pacific University.
The 5’11” guard played high school basketball at Seven Lakes High School, which is the same high school as current Wildcat Sydney Buchel.
Bannister was a two-time All-District selection her junior and senior high school seasons and during her time at Seven Lakes she set the school record for most three-point field goals made in a game and season.
She averaged 7.8 points and three rebounds per game her senior year. She is originally from Melbourne, Australia and moved to the United State her freshman year of high school. He will major in criminal justice while at Baker.
“We are looking forward to Julia being a part of our program,” said Baker head women’s basketball coach Ben Lister. “She has great ability to stretch the defense and she can score and rebound around the basket as well. She fits our system and her length gives her the ability to shoot over the top.
“Julia comes from a large competitive high school in Texas that knows how to win and the kids are well-coached. I think she has a lot of upside which makes me excited about seeing her growth the next few years. I know she is excited about coming in and being a part of our program and I anticipate her competing for minutes right away.”
In 2016 Baker ended the season ranked No. 7 in the final NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, its highest-ever ranking. The Wildcats also advanced all the way to the NAIA national championship game, marking just the second team in the history of Baker Athletics to do so. Baker’s 28-9 overall record, marked the most wins in school-history.
