Have you heard of "Informed Delivery"? It is a brand new tool that lets you see mail before its delivered. In an article posted on Tech Crunch,
Informed Delivery is a service from the United States Postal Service that scans the outside of your mail and shows you the images each morning before the mail is actually delivered. While the USPS first started testing the free service more than a year ago, it’s finally rolling out (almost) nationwide for residential addresses. Now it’s available in almost every major metropolitan area, and by April 14th will be available in most of the remaining ZIP Codes covering the U.S.On the Post Offices website, it states:
To make sure you aren’t getting anyone else’s mail, USPS sends you a physical letter with a verification code when you sign up. - TechCrunch
See your household mail - even while traveling.
Get an email each morning with images of that day's mailbox contents.
In other media reports, Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe, said that the imageng had been used “a couple of times” by law enforcement to trace letters in criminal cases. His comments also stated that the the images were usually stored for up to thirty days and then destroyed.
General Donahoe, also said that the images are taken at over 200 processing plants around the country. In addition, the technology is already used everyday to sort the mail by zip code and street address.
