WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Number 13 Baker Stays Hot with Fifth-Straight Heart Win


BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Number 13 ranked Baker University women’s basketball team captured its fifth-straight Heart of America Athletic Conference victory on Saturday, as they rolled past Mt. Mercy, 76-44.

The Wildcats are now 8-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play, while Mt. Mercy falls to 4-5 and 2-5 in Heart action.

Baker is now in a three-way tie for second place with number 11 Benedictine and William Penn.

For the second-straight game Baker’s defense carried the way, as they held Mt. Mercy to just 15 first half points.

Mount Mercy committed 18 turnovers and shot just 25.5-percent from the field and just 1-of-9 from three-point range.

Offensively, Baker had three double-digit scorers, as Mackenzie Cook scored 12, Jessica Zweifel added 10, as did Sydney Buchel.

Baker outrebounded Mt. Mercy, 42-32, and shot 50-percent from the floor on 29-of-58 shooting.

Kelsey Larson had a team-high nine rebounds and Buchel along with Courtney Hoag had two blocks.

The Wildcats will next hit the road to face number 20 Columbia College on Wednesday, December 7 at 7 p.m.

The last time Baker and Columbia squared off, came on March 16, 2016 inside the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in the First Round of the 2016 NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship, as the Wildcats won, 80-71.
