BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The number two ranked Baker University football team captured its twenty-third straight win over a Heart of America Athletic Conference opponent in its 65-42 win over number 23 Peru State on Saturday afternoon, inside Liston Stadium.
The Wildcats move to 6-0 on the season and have won seven-straight over Peru State. Baker is now 7-2 all-time against the Bobcats. Peru State moves to 4-2 on the year.
Logan Brettell had a record-setting day, as he broke Mack Brown’s school record all-time passing yards mark.
Mack Brown threw for 8,278 passing yards in his career, Brettell passed him on Saturday, as Brettell has now thrown for 8,446 yards in his impressive career, he now has a Baker record 84 passing touchdowns as well.
He and Clarence Clark connected on a 99-yard TD pass with 14:11 to go in the 4th quarter, which also broke a school record.
The previous record was held by BU offensive coordinator Jake Morse who threw a 98-yard TD pass to Clark back in 2013.
JD Woods started the scoring on the second play from scrimmage, as he took a touchdown run 70 yards to put BU up 7-0 with 14:40 to go in the first quarter.
Peru State put together a long 11 play, 52-yard drive that took 5:59 and ended with a Sean Van Briesen 1-yard TD run.
Then Baker scored three-straight touchdowns, as Nick Snider scored on a 16-yard pass from Brettell, Tywonn Moss then scored on a 17-yard pass from Brettell and then JD Woods scampered for a 2-yard TD run to give BU the 28-7 lead.
Travis Carnahan cut into the lead with a 20-yard TD run for Peru State with 8:54 to go in the third quarter. Clark scored the final TD of the half on a 47-yard TD reception with 4:35 to go in the half. Clark finished with four catches for 164 yards and averaged 41 yards per catch.
Brettell finished up 22-of-32 for 374 yards and five touchdowns. Woods led the way on the ground with 11 carries for 127 yards and three scores.
Baker’s leading tackler Indie Allen started off the scoring for Baker in the second half, as he picked up a fumble and ran 80-yards for a TD with 11:32 to go in the 3rd quarter. He led Baker in tackles on the day with 15.
After a 40-yard interception return for a TD by Peru State’s Michael Bullard, Snider scored his second TD of the day on a 28-yard pass from Brettell.
Then Brettell and Clark connected on that 99-yard touchdown before Peru State scored two more touchdown’s to end the game.
Abram Garcia also hit a 42-yard field goal in the game, he is now four-of-five on the year on field goal attempts.
The Baker defense held Peru State to just 237 yards rushing and 241 yards passing. Landon Decker also recovered a fumble for the Wildcat defense, as Aderio Ammons forced the fumble. Kegan Schumann also had double-digit tackles with 11.
Punter Elijah Gastelum had a fantastic day punting, as he had two punts with an average of 60.5 per attempt and a long of 68.
