BALDWIN CITY, Kansas –
The Baker University football team continued
its winning ways against the Heart of America Athletic Conference on
Saturday, as it won its 20-striaght game in the Heart in a 67-7 win over
Culver-Stockton in a game that was broadcast worldwide on the Watch
ESPN App and locally on KSMO-TV.
Baker
moves to 3-0 on the year, while the CS-C Wildcats fall to 0-3. This
marks the fourth-straight year Baker has started a season, 4-0.
Baker
had 781 yards of total offense on 74 plays, good for 10.6 yards per
play. That is just one yard shy from tying Baker’s all-time record for
total yards in a game, the ‘Cats had 782 yards
against Central Methodist in 1980.
In
the victory, Logan Brettell became Baker’s all-time leader in total
offensive yards, the senior from Overland Park, Kansas broke Mack
Brown’s previous record, as Brettell now has 8,116
yards with 7,469 passing and 647 rushing.
Baker
led 23-0 at the end of the first quarter and 51-7 at halftime. In that
first quarter reigning Heart Offensive Player of the Week JD Woods took
the first snap from scrimmage 36-yards
for a TD.
Then
Josh Kock sacked quarterback Jalen Jones in the end zone for a safety,
to give Baker the 9-0 lead in the first minute of the game.
Then
just 12 seconds later NAIA’s all-time leading scorer Clarence Clark
scored on an 81-yard TD pass from Brettell. On the ‘Cats next
possession, Clark scored again on a 27-yard TD pass
from Brettell.
Juan King scored CSC’s only touchdown with 14:26 to go in the third quarter on a 18-yard TD reception from Jones.
Then Baker scored 34 unanswered points, as Nate Pauly scored on back-to-back TD runs of 8-yards and 24-yards.
Woods
scored again from 54 yards out, then Nick Snider scored his first TD as
a Wildcat on a 12-yard pass from Brettell. Brettell went 10-of-13 for
245 yards and three TD’s.
In
the second half, Clark nailed a 39-yard field goal, to put Baker up
54-7. Then Lee Andrews received a pass from Brandon Mueller and scored
from 21-yards out and Ronald Allen finished off
the game with a 63-yard TD run to make the final score 67-7.
Allen ran 19 times for 139 yards, while Woods went 133 on eight carries.
Defensively,
Indie Allen led the team in tackles with 11 and Kock and Brennen
Kellogg each had a sack. Clay Drouillard also had an interception for
Baker in the second half.
The
BU defense held CS-C to just 142 rushing yards and 147 passing yards,
good for 289 total yards. Jones was 10-of-28 for 106 yards for
Culver-Stockton.
