Letter to the Editor: Affordable Care Act

Letter to the Editor

How important is President-elect Donald Trump's promise to repeal Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) to America's health?
It is a matter of life and death and that is no hyperbole. Obamacare architect Ezekiel Emanuel blamed the Hippocratic Oath because "It encourages doctors to care for the patients before them without concern for 'cost or effect on others.' "
Robert Reich, Obama's economic advisor stated in reference to Obamacare, "If you’re very old, we’re not going to give you all that technology and all those drugs for the last couple of years of your life to keep you maybe going for another couple of months. It’s too expensive…so we’re going to let you die.”. I hope Donald Trump keeps this very important promise to repeal ACA.

  1. Sorry, but this is one of the many lies promulgated by Republicans about the Affordable Care Act, simply because it was developed under the administration of a black president. Go to https://www.healthcare.gov/where-can-i-read-the-affordable-care-act/ where you can download a searchable, full, final version of the act (2.41 MB version). If you go to sec. 1302 Essential Health Benefits Requirements, sec. 4 Required Elements for Consideration, it says
"In defining the essential health benefits in paragraph (1), the secretary shall...
    (B) not make coverage decisions, determine reimbirsement rates, establish incentive programs,or design benefits in ways that discriminate against individuals because of their age, disability, or expected length of life."

People who have actually subscribed to the ACA have actually found out it's good insurance. Read the actual provisions, instead of spreading the lies about it. Oh, and as for premiums being high in certain states, residents of those states should be screaming at their Republican governors who decided not to set up the state exchanges that would have made subsidies available to their residents, and Donald Trump who is sabotaging the Act by holding up subsidies, and lifting the mandate which gives better shared risk.
