Letter to the Editor: Don't Lose Sight of the True Purpose

Scott D. Schultz
Founder and President
Morning Star Care Homes
Fredonia, Neodesha, Baldwin City, Ottawa

Dear Editor,
My wife and I founded Morning Star  Care Homes in memory of our grandparents who suffered in institutional nursing facilities because we wanted something better for our parents' generation. We knew that we were called to create real home environments for all levels-assisted, memory and total care-as alternatives to traditional nursing facilities. We know our residents as our own family members and treat each person with the highest level of care.
In the burgeoning Senior Living industry, the problem is not that we are unprepared for the massive influx of baby boomers needing care. The problem is that with this demographic change at the door, the corporate Senior Living industry is not just unprepared, it is in complete crisis and chaos.
A New Jersey company allowing 36 facilities in Kansas and Nebraska to be taken over by the State to protect elderly residents is barely news these days. The stories come so regularly we are desensitized to the horror. Residents in Houston up tp their hips in flood water. Heat-related deaths in Florida because the facility failed to evacuate. Local facilities put on the State of Kansas watch list.
And lest our non-profit facilities, our home health, home care and hospice claim the high ground, they regularly receive publicity about committing Medicare fraud, or for employing caregivers who steal their client's assets while working in their personal residences.
The largest provider of Senior Living in the United States was reportedly in talks about selling out to the Chinese, and now discusses its proposed solutions as a "strategic pivot." As an owner and operator, I mused as to how one "pivots" after accepting responsibility for the health and welfare of 100,000 residents and a roughly similar number of employees, then financially while the former CEO took home $6.6 million in pay. Some of the large players are currently investing profits in professional sports franchises.
After all these years in business I continue to believe in the following fundamentals for our care homes: Maintain local ownership and operate a small number of facilities to insure you are involved at the ground level. Staff to the level of care the residents need. Provide a real home enviroment. And finally, be ethical in all you do.
It is imperative that the corporate Senior Living industry not lose sight of the true purpose of our chosen profession. We all must do better to implement solid solutions before the wave of seniors arrives.

ComfortCare Homes Aquires Senior Living Facilities

Press Release

ComfortCare Homes in Baldwin City, Kansas has acquired Vintage Park at Neodesha and Vintage Park at Fredonia from Chicago Pacific Founders, according to Scott Schultz, President of ComfortCare Homes of Baldwin City and Ottawa.
Concurrent with this Acquisition, all care homes owned and operated by Schultz will now be operated under the Morningstar Care Homes brand, replacing the ComfortCare Homes brand in Baldwin City and Ottawa, and immediately replacing the Vintage Park brand in Fredonia and Neodesha.
Morningstar Care Homes now has a senior living capacity of 81 residents in these four homes. The corporate office will remain at 813 8th Street in Baldwin City.
In addition, Morningstar Care Homes at Dunn’s Vista, located in Baldwin City is under construction and plans a grand opening for the 12-bed home in 2018.
“The acquisitions in Fredonia and Neodesha continue our drive to be the senior living provider of choice in the markets we serve,” said Schultz. “With the addition of the home at Dunn’s Vista in 2018 approximately 50% our residential services will be provided to individuals who require the personalized memory care we are known for, and we expect memory care to be our dominant service offering in the future.
“We remain grateful to ComfortCare Homes of Wichita for helping us become established,” continued Schultz. “We are very excited to firmly establish the Morningstar brand in existing and new markets that cover a broad range of senior living services including in-home non-medical care, assisted living, respite care, adult day care and of course our personalized memory care service.”

Senior Mix - December 14

The Baldwin City Community Senior Mix will meet from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14 for their Christmas Party. Held in Fellowship Hall of Ives Chapel United Methodist Church, those seniors wishing to do so are asked to bring a container--basket, bag, or decorated shoe box with an entree. For example, if one should use soup for the entree, add a box of crackers; a package of spaghetti with a container of spaghetti sauce, or a cake mix with a can of icing. The challenge is the creativity of preparing an entree. If necessary, add a recipe. The most creative entree will receive a prize! In past years, the Mix has enjoyed various types of white elephant exchanges or a low cost limit of items which were challenging, but this year brings a new challenge in the spirit of giving. The items will be delivered to the Baldwin City Community Food Pantry from the Senior Mix. There will be singing of carols accompanied by Becky McMillen on the guitar and other fun activities. Seniors are asked to bring a "Christmas goodie" for the common table to enjoy at fellowship time. All seniors in the Baldwin City Community from 55 to 105 are invited and welcome.

The fundraiser, which accepted freewill donations help raise funds for the cities transportation services for the elderly and handicapped.
