Baldwin City Radio will Cease Broadcasting May 31st

Kevin Surbaugh

In a brief announcement in the Facebook group Citizens for the Future of Baldwin City, Jay Wachs, owner of Baldwin City radio announced that Baldwin City Radio, the online radio station that broadcast classic hits from the 60's, 70's, 80's will cease operation on May 31, 2018.  The station which started one year ago plays a variety of music that included classic rock, classic country, classic pop and classic soul with a rotation that included over 3,000 songs.
When asked by the Gazette, Wachs cited lack of community support among reasons why he is shutting down the radio station.
In his post, Wachs encouraged people to turn their computer to his original online radio, Lawrencehits.com, which offers pop hits from the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

Kansas Expands Health Services for Children

Kansas Department of Health and Environment Press Release

CHIP recipients gain greater access to mental health and substance use services

TOPEKA – Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Secretary Jeff Andersen is pleased to announce the State of Kansas has received federal approval to strengthen access to mental health and substance use services for participants of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved KDHE’s CHIP Parity State Plan Amendment, which requires that mental health and substance use disorder treatments be considered equally with medical and surgical benefits. Kansas is the third state in the country to receive approval for this amendment.

“This Parity Amendment ensures that mental health and substance use disorders are treated no differently than other medical disorders by Medicaid and larger insurance plans,” said KDHE Chief Medical Officer Dr. Greg Lakin. “It provides protection to patients with these types of diagnoses, where, historically, they were often treated differently.”

The amendment is part of the mental health regulations put into effect by CMS on October 1, 2017. CHIP provides health care coverage for low-income children living in families with incomes that exceed Medicaid limits. Within CHIP, states are awarded yearly allotments. Kansas provides low-cost health insurance coverage to children who are under the age of 19, do not qualify for Medicaid, have family incomes under 232 percent of the federal poverty level, and are not eligible for State employee health insurance and are not covered by private health insurance.

“KDHE worked quickly with CMS to get this amendment approved for CHIP recipients,” said KDHE Medicaid Director Jon Hamdorf. “This is just one of our efforts to expand access to vital services for low-income Kansans.”

Letter to the Editor: Legal Protection for Faith-Based Adoption Agencies

Wayne Lela, Downers Grove, IL

Thankfully Kansas state lawmakers have approved legislation that would grant legal protections to faith-based adoption agencies that cite their religious beliefs for not placing children in LGBT homes.  But it's amazing and alarming that this country has sunk so low morally that such legislation is actually needed.  Placing innocent little children with parents who openly set immoral lifestyle examples for their children is almost super-obviously wrong and could be considered a subtle form of child abuse.
Thinking people have known for centuries that homosexual activity is immoral and a bad legal precedent, plus have known that homosexuality is an objective disorder.  For example, Plato wisely and logically deprecated homosexual activity centuries ago.  Many other intellectuals over the years have also deprecated homosexual activity.  It is relatively easy to point out serious flaws in all the arguments homosexuals use to try to rationalize homosexual activity.  So, to put voluntary aberrant homosexual activity on the same level as involuntary skin color or age is clearly absurd and downright offensive to many people of color.
It may surprise you that some colleges like Harvard now have officially recognized student groups devoted to promoting the acceptance of BDSM---sexually deviant bondage, discipline, sadism, and masochism. That's right. If you are a psychologically disturbed student who gets sexual thrills from hurting people, some colleges like Harvard now have groups for you! Is that bizarre or what. (Are Neanderthals running that school?)
Those paying attention can see that the "logic" of heterophobic homosexuals is rapidly leading this society down a slippery slope to a more aberrant, disordered, and irrational society. Legal polygamy is coming soon. Maybe down the line, we'll see "marriage" between straight and homosexual consenting-adult incestuous people! Whoopee! Anyone who thinks this is progress is deluding him/herself.
- Wayne Lela

Jaw Bats the Hidden Gem in Downtown Baldwin City

Kevin Surbaugh

Jacob Walters of Jaw Bats shows off examples of his custom
designs. This one has all the players from the
World Series-winning Kansas City Royals.
Photographer D. Kevin Surbaugh
Recently, an open house was held at Jaw Bats. During the open house Jacob Walters, owner of Jaw Bats gave a tour of the facility, which is located in the back half of the building that houses the vintage marketplace Papa's Nest. The tour started out with the lathe.  He joked that he was kind of crazy, and still makes the bats by hand. From there, they moved to the scales used to weigh the bats.  Which prompted a child in the group to ask, why he needed to weigh the bats. Walters explained that different people want different weights of bats. As the tour progressed, the group moved into the wood storage and finishing area. Walters explained that this room was humidity and temperature controlled. When the wood comes in he has to through each one and weighs each and every piece. The wood is racked according to quality and type of woods. He has maple, ash; which is a dwindling pile because it's a dying species, then there is birch, which he expects to be the new wood to work with. Walters said that his bats range from $130 on the cheaper to $175 for the best of the best.

bats produced by Jaw Bats. A locally owned company

In the finishing side of the room, which he said was his favorite area, he has another lathe to spin the bat as he paints it. As the tour came to an end, he showed off some of his finished bats. During this portion of the tour, he was asked if he used a laser to do all the engraving on the custom bats. His reply seemed to shock the questioner, as he told her that he used an acetylene torch, including the fine carving of all the player's names from the World Series-winning Royals team.

After the tour, some of those on the tour took a specific interest in the finished bats hanging on the wall. Some even trying the feel out of a few of them.

Jacob and Kristin Walters of Jaw Bats cut the
ribbon during an open house at their Baldwin City
facility.

During the ribbon-cutting portion of the open house Jeanette Blackmar, Baldwin City Chamber director, said that it was great to see young people come and open a new business.
Tony Brown, Baldwin City Council member, who represents the council to the chamber, commented on the number of people who were in attendance, saying that it was unusual to see that many people at the chambers open houses and ribbon cuttings.
Musing that the size of crowd speaks to the kind of work that Walters does.
Brown said that he had and others on the chamber had wondered what is going to replace the drum maker that had previously occupied the space? What is going to fill that space? He said there was nothing that could fill that space, as cool as drums. Then he asked,
but how cool is this?
Continuing, Brown said that it captures something about our childhood.

He's taken toys that he has played with, and he's making functioning works of art.
Brown thanked Walters for coming to Baldwin City and setting up shop and vesting in the community. Saying the city wants him to be "wildly successful," perhaps even the international center for bats. A statement that drew applause from the crowd gathered in the small workshop.

Kwik Shop Sell Complete

PRNewswire

CINCINNATI, OH - The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) which owns Dillons, announced last week that it had completed the sale of its convenience store business unit, including the Kwik Shops in Kansas,  to EG Group for $2.15 billion.

After-tax proceeds total $1.7 billion. $1.2 billion of the proceeds will be used to fund an accelerated share repurchase ("ASR") program.
"Throughout the sales process, we have been impressed with EG Group's professionalism, commitment to people, and understanding of the U.S. convenience retail market," said Mike Schlotman, Kroger's executive vice president and chief financial officer. "I can't stress enough how important to our success Kroger's convenience store management and associates have been, and we want to thank them for all of their contributions to our customers and our company."
Kroger announced in October 2017 its intention to explore strategic alternatives for its convenience store business, including a potential sale, in conjunction with Restock Kroger. In February, Kroger and EG Group announced a definitive agreement for the sale of Kroger's convenience store business unit to EG Group.
The Transition Services Agreement (TSA) Kroger has in place with EG Group will not have a material effect on the company's 2018 results, nor will it have any effect on Kroger's 2018 net earnings per diluted share guidance. The TSA covers a variety of services for varying lengths of time.
Included in the sale were 762 convenience stores, including 66 franchise operations, operating in 18 states and employing 11,000 associates under the following banner names: Turkey Hill, Loaf 'N Jug, Kwik Shop, Tom Thumb and Quik Stop. Kroger's supermarket fuel centers and its Turkey Hill Dairy were not included in the sale. EG Group will establish their North American headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio and continue to operate stores under their established banner names.

Gubnertorial Candidate Jim Barnett Praises Legislative Action Funding Schools

Press Release

Jim Barnett
Topeka – Jim Barnett, former state senator and current candidate for governor, on Monday (March 30, 2018) praised the legislature for adopting a school funding package that will infuse approximately $525 million into the state school finance fund.

"I am particularly excited to see this contentious issue behind us so that Kansas can move forward to provide for our most needed resource, our children. I know this legislation resulted only from long hours of discussion and often consternation by some members of the legislature," he said.

A longtime supporter of education, Barnett said he is mindful that the legislation must still meet the approval of the Supreme Court, which ordered the funding in a lawsuit that challenged the fairness and adequacy of the existing school finance formula.

"I also have been very dubious of a plan by some members of the legislature, who instead of providing for suitable funding mandated by the Constitution and Supreme Court, would write the kids out of the constitution through a hastily conceived referendum," Barnett said.
