BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The number 10 ranked Baker Wildcats fell to 1-1-0, losing their first game of the season to the Hastings Broncos by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night.
Despite getting more shots off in the first half with six to Hastings’ four, the Wildcats trailed at halftime 1-0 thanks to a goal from the Broncos’ Marc Tautz.
Kyle Young had a free kick that almost reached the net in the 51st minute, but was saved at the last second by Hastings goalkeeper Joe White.
The Broncos came back five minutes later with their second unanswered goal from Hastings forward Adam Knight.
A red card issued to Hastings’ Daniel Fragachan in the 58th minute gave the Wildcats an opportunity to make a comeback, but they were unable to take advantage of having a player up on the Broncos until the final second of the game, when Blake Levine scored for the Wildcats to bring the score to 2-1.
In addition to the red, the Broncos also had three yellow cards issued in the game.
The Wildcats played aggressive offense, shooting the ball 13 times, but were only on target for four.
Austin Halsey led BU with four shots of his own. The Wildcats also had an advantage in fouls, drawing 15 and committing just 11.
A 45-minute weather delay was called with 15:04 to play due to lightning in the area.
When the game resumed, the Wildcats had three shots, including the goal by Levine.
The Wildcats will take on the number 5 ranked Davenport University Panthers in Lima, Ohio on Friday and number 18 ranked University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday.
