MEN'S SOCCER: Number 25 Hastings Upsets Number 10 Baker, 2-1

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The number 10 ranked Baker Wildcats fell to 1-1-0, losing their first game of the season to the Hastings Broncos by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night.

 

Despite getting more shots off in the first half with six to Hastings’ four, the Wildcats trailed at halftime 1-0 thanks to a goal from the Broncos’ Marc Tautz.

Kyle Young had a free kick that almost reached the net in the 51st minute, but was saved at the last second by Hastings goalkeeper Joe White.

The Broncos came back five minutes later with their second unanswered goal from Hastings forward Adam Knight.

A red card issued to Hastings’ Daniel Fragachan in the 58th minute gave the Wildcats an opportunity to make a comeback, but they were unable to take advantage of having a player up on the Broncos until the final second of the game, when Blake Levine scored for the Wildcats to bring the score to 2-1.

In addition to the red, the Broncos also had three yellow cards issued in the game.

The Wildcats played aggressive offense, shooting the ball 13 times, but were only on target for four.

Austin Halsey led BU with four shots of his own. The Wildcats also had an advantage in fouls, drawing 15 and committing just 11.

A 45-minute weather delay was called with 15:04 to play due to lightning in the area.

When the game resumed, the Wildcats had three shots, including the goal by Levine.

The Wildcats will take on the number 5 ranked Davenport University Panthers in Lima, Ohio on Friday and number 18 ranked University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday.

Logan Brettell Named Heart Offensive Player of the Week

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Baker University junior quarterback Logan Brettell was named this week’s Heart of America Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after leading the number 5 Baker Wildcats to a 36-13 win over number 6 Grand View on Saturday August 27.

The Overland Park, Kansas native had a huge season opener accounting for five total touchdowns.

He finished the day with 11 carries for 45 yards and three rushing TD’s while throwing for 371 yards completing 33-of-44 passes and two TD’s.

The Wildcats began 2016 similar to 2015, as they defeated the Vikings, 20-15, in last seasons opening game in Des Moines, Iowa.

Baker will next take on Culver-Stockton this Saturday, September 3 at 1 p.m. inside Liston Stadium.

Palmyra Lodge Raises Funds For Baldwin City Emergency Fund and More

A small crowd was inside Palmyra Lodge at 7:30 A,M., with only about six in attendance.. As the morning went by the tables began to fill up more to enjoy the biscuits and gravy. One of those in attendance, Dave Hill, commented the biscuits and gravy were very good.  Which summed up the sentiments of everyone that came out early on the morning of Saturday August 27, 2016 to support the Mason's and the many charitable things the group does. 
When asked what the $5 fundraiser supported, several group members chimed in with a list of some of the things they do. Some of which, are supported with other fundraisers and raffles throughout the year.

• Baldwin City Community Food Pantry
• Christmas Presents for Underprivileged Children

Baldwin City Fire Department Annual Boot Block for MDA

Baldwin City Fire and Rescue hosted their annual Boot Block Saturday, August 27th to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Firefighters were stationed at the intersection of Ames (Highway 56) and 6th Street and on 8th Street near the Baldwin City Market where passers-by could drop cash and change in a fire boot without leaving their vehicles. Everything from pennies to fifty dollar bills were collected and will be donated to MDA. This year was one of the best yet with over $3,000 collected. Several of the firefighter's wives and children helped out with the event to make it a family affair. Chief Terry Baker said "I'm very thankful for the firefighters and their families for all their help and to the citizens whose generous donations make this charity possible".

Rainy Week

This past week has seen a larger amount of rain then what is normal. Average precipitation in August is 4.41 inches. In Gardener they seen that in two days, where over four inches fell in that period of time.  Here in Baldwin City, we seen nearly an inch and a half by Thursday morning. 
By Saturday, we had received a total of two and half inches of rain.  between Wednesday and Saturday we seen at least a half inch of rain each day.
The rains, which came mostly in the overnight hours dumped heavy amounts of water on the area.  Saturday evening, lightening could be seen to the west and thunder could be heard, but Baldwin City itself was spared another night of rain.  However, rain is in the forecast everyday through Tuesday.

Bayless Take Possession Their New Home

The Bayless family arrived to their new home (1100 Fremont) in the back of a stretch limo that had problems turning unto Fremont Street. After pulling in front of the driveway, the car stopped as the driver let out Alicia, Josh and their children Jason, Alison and Cody. As the ceremony/ribbon cutting for the families new home began, they opened with a prayer by Pastor Paul Babcock of Baldwin First United Methodist Church.  Erika Zimmerman, Habitat For Humanity Executive Director, said that Baldwin City is a fantastic community has inspired the Lawrence Habitat for Humanity.  The city as a whole turned out to volunteer with the build, raise the funds needed to build the house. The home however, is not just given to the family, they will have a mortgage to pay off, although it will be a 30-year interest free mortgage, besides all the sweat equity they were required to put into it.

Alicia Bayless, thanked all the volunteers that made this happen. She and the family were then presented with gifts of a family bible, embossed with their family name. Restore Lawrence manager Michelle Johnson presented the family with a $100 gift certificate and a bag of cleaning supplies which were donated by Procter and Gamble.  Logan Morley, Lawrence High School Habitat Club, presented the family with a $400 Walmart gift certificate and Kim Wampler. Family Support Committee, gave the family a photo frame filled with family pictures including of the baby, Jason, welding the hammer during the nail drive ceremony.
The 1900 square foot home features a bedroom for each child and a storm shelter in one of the bathrooms.  Karen Zimmerman, one of those in attendance, said that she loves the closets and bay window. 

Number 10 Baker Mens Soccer Completes Perfect Day at Liston Stadium with Win over Ottawa

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – Four goals by four different Wildcats lifted the number 10 Wildcats over the Ottawa Braves for the fourth-consecutive year Saturday at Liston Stadium.

Three of those goals came in the second half, as Baker finished the game with 16 shots, compared to Ottawa’s two.

Ottawa also received more fouls than Baker by a 14-8 margin, and two of those fouls came less than a minute prior to Baker goals.

Kyle Young kicked off the scoring in the first half with a goal assisted by Peyton Brown to put the Wildcats up 1-0 less than seven minutes into the game.

Goalkeeper Patrick Rydberg had to make just one save for the entire game, and zero in the first half as Baker dominated defensively, led by defenders Young, Brown, Spencer Atkin and Gonnie Ben-Tal.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead into halftime, and took less than ten minutes to add to the lead, as Austin Halsey scored in the 54th minute.

Freshman Carter Yancey got in on the scoring action later in the half, scoring in the 76th minute, giving Baker a 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats still did not relent, as less than ten minutes later, Aiden Kuhls scored off of a Jordan Thacker assist, bringing the game to its final tally of 4-0.

The Wildcats are now 1-0-0 on the season, and on Tuesday will take on the number 25 ranked 0-1-0 Hastings College Broncos.

The Broncos fell to The University of Science and Arts Oklahoma 3-2 Saturday. The last time the two teams met, the Wildcats won 2-1 in 2015.

This also marked a perfect 3-0 day for Baker Athletics at Liston Stadium on Saturday, as number 5 Baker football defeated number 6 Grand View, 36-13, and number 13 women’s soccer shut out Bethany, 1-0.

Baker Womens Soccer Shuts Out Bethany to Open 2016

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – In the season opening match against the Bethany College Swedes, the number 13 ranked Baker Wildcats came away with a 1-0 victory.

The game was a much tougher task for the Wildcats than last year’s 8-0 win over the Swedes.

Baker was held scoreless until 10:54 to go in the second half, when freshman Erica Esch came off of the bench to score via a Taylor Baum assist.

Baker’s defense dominated, allowing just four shots from Bethany all contest. The ‘Cats had possession for much of the first half, outshooting Bethany 7-2, with four shots on goal compared to Bethany’s one.

BU had three shots on goal in the first seven minutes of the game, but were all saved by Bethany’s Jovana Canales.

Krista Hooper led the Wildcats with four shots and two shots on goal, equal to Bethany’s team total.

Esch’s goal came on her only shot of the game, and Baum’s assist comes after having two all of last season.

In perhaps their best goal-scoring opportunity of the night, Bethany’s Haley Harris had a chance to answer Baker’s goal just minutes after it had occurred, but the shot soared high of the post.

Another shot on goal by Bethany with just 2:45 remaining was saved by Baker’s Rachel Hunt, the Swedes final opportunity of the game.

The Swedes dropped to 0-2-0 following the loss, and a previous loss to (RV) MidAmerica Nazarene University.

The Wildcats are now 1-0, and will take on seventh-ranked Westmont College on Sunday at 7:00 pm inside Liston Stadium.
