We are on the search for the best burger in Topeka. Here is how we rate the burger joints that we will review. First we put heavy emphasis on where the joint is headquartered, Local (Topeka) will garner an automatic 10 bonus points. Kansas owned chains (headquartered in Lawrence, Wichita, etc) an automatic 5 bonus points and National chains (those headquartered outside the state) will garner an automatic 0 bonus points. The ten categories that we will use in our search for the best burger in Topeka will be 1.Burger Patties Quality, 2. Bun Quality, 3. Customer Service, 4. Garnish Quality, 5. Fries Quality, 6. Atmosphere, 7. Order Accuracy, 8. Cleanliness (Restrooms, Dinning area, Entrance, etc), 9. Building Accessibility and 10. Price. All categories will earn a score between 1 and 10, with 10 being the highest and 1 being the poorest.
Today we are visiting Spangles at 29th and Topeka. It is a favorite among some Topekan's, but mainly for its 50's atmosphere. With hit 50's and 60's music on the intercom, 50's and 60's memorabilia on the walls and Angus beef patties, what is there not to love?
Bonus Points:
Spangles is not a Topeka based restaurant. It's a chain restaurant that is only in Kansas and is headquartered in Wichita. Therefore they only earned
5 bonus points.
1. Burger Patties Quality
7
The burgers were good and hot, however they were slightly burnt and dry. I like my burger done, but I don't want them burned and I prefer them to be moist but not greasy.
2. Bun Quality
9
The bun was very good. It was not dried out and was toasted perfectly.
3. Customer Service
8
Customer service was pretty average. It was nothing to brag about. They did seem friendly greeting everyone as they entered to restaurant.
4. Garnish Quality
8
The garnish very fresh. Which normally would be a good thing, except the tomato on my wife's burger was still green. I don't know about you, but my wife prefers her tomatoes ripe.
5. Fries Quality
10
The fries were excellent and hot. They weren't the same as McDonald's, but they were close. I give them high marks here.Great job on the fries guys.
6. Atmosphere
10
Great music. As I said in the beginning, what's not to love with hit songs from the 50's and 60's?
7. Order Accuracy
10
Both my wife and I had special orders for the burgers. Both orders were made as we had requested.
8. Cleanliness (Restrooms, Dinning area, Entrance, etc)
4
The floors were wet, with several wet floor signs around. Of course the floors were wet because customers brought snow in from the poorly plowed parking lot and sidewalk. The drive thru still was covered in mushy snow from cars driving through it. It appeared no one tried to plow it all. Even though it had been a week since it snowed 13 inches.
Neither of us used the restroom so we cannot rate the cleanliness of the restrooms. As for the entrance it wasn't cleared very well. I would have expected better.
9. Building Accessibility
3
If it wasn't for the snow, it would have been pretty accessible. However, despite laws that say side walks and parking lots are to be cleared within 48 hours of the end of any snow storm. The handicapped ramp was a sheet of ice and closer the sidewalk got to said ramp the narrower the path got. Which I am sure could garner a number of ADA fines in addition to the fines from the city in regards to clearing of the sidewalks.
10. Price
7
We were there on a Monday, which is half-price burger nite after 5 pm. Our order included 2 Gourmet Supreme Burgers $1.99/each (normally $3.99/each), 2 small fries at $1.59/each and 2 small drinks at $1.59/each with a 45 cent discount for a senior drink. Grand total was $10.76. A good price, but if it wasn't half Monday, I would say it was overpriced.
