Overbrook Mural

 Don't Overlook Overbrook

A short drive from Topeka, is a mural along Highway 56. It is perhaps the best know attraction in this small community, of Overbrook, KS. The mural decorates a building in the heart of Overbrook, depicting the town’s history: city hall (which is still in use), the M.E. Church, the railroad that prompted the founding of the town site, and the thousands of wagons that crossed the area as they followed the Santa Fe Trail.

The Burger Stand - College Hill

We are on the search for the best burger in Topeka. Here is how we rate the burger joints that we will review. First we put heavy emphasis on where the joint is headquartered, Local (Topeka) will garner an automatic 10 bonus points. Kansas owned chains (headquartered in Lawrence, Wichita, etc) an automatic 5 bonus points and National chains (those headquartered outside the state) will garner an automatic 0 bonus points. The ten categories that we will use in our search for the best burger in Topeka will be 1.Burger Patties Quality, 2. Bun Quality, 3. Customer Service, 4. Garnish Quality, 5. Fries Quality, 6. Atmosphere, 7. Order Accuracy, 8. Cleanliness (Restrooms, Dinning area, Entrance, etc), 9. Building Accessibility and 10. Price. All categories will earn a score between 1 and 10, with 10 being the highest and 1 being the poorest.

 Bonus Points: 5
Headquartered in Lawrence, KS. The Topeka location is their second and newest location.

1. Burger Patties Quality: 9
The patties were tasty and juicy, although neither were cooked as we ordered them. That aside they did have a fantastic flame broiled taste. Enhanced greatly, by the ice cold Coca-Cola™ we were drinking to was it down with.

2. Bun Quality: 10
What can I say, the bun was nicely toasted and still had that excellent soft, fresh taste.

3. Customer Service: 10
Th staff was very friendly from the order taker at the counter/bar to the busboy cleaning the tables around us.

4. Garnish Quality: 10
The vegetable garnish tomato, lettuce and onion) was very fresh and good.

5. Fries Quality: 8
The fries had a great taste with a hint of seasoning salt. Perhaps even a little to much.

6. Atmosphere: 7
While promoted as a family place, even having a kids menu, the atmosphere is somewhat of a bar atmosphere. Which means some kids may find it to noisy.

7. Order Accuracy: 5
We both ordered the "Classic", which doesn't come with ketchup or pickles. So the wife ordered hers with lettuce only, and I ordered mine plain (since they don't come with ketchup). Ketchup and mustard is on every table.  When we received our orders, one burger came with lettuce on, as ordered, and the other came with all the vegetables, despite being ordered plain.

8. Cleanliness (Restrooms, Dinning area, Entrance, etc): 10
Dining, entrance area and restrooms were all clean and well maintained, even during a busy lunch rush on a Saturday afternoon.

9. Building Accessibility: 10
The building has great accessibility with two handicapped accessible stalls in the curbside parking on 15th street.

10. Price: 7
A little pricy. The Burger Stand fancies themselves a gourmet burger joint and their prices reflect that.  We ordered "The Classic" which was the cheapest burger on the adult menu.
Burger $8.50 each
Side order of fries $2 each
Soda $2.50 each

Horizons Hamburger Palace

We are on the search for the best burger in Topeka. Here is how we rate the burger joints that we will review. First we put heavy emphasis on where the joint is headquartered, Local (Topeka) will garner an automatic 10 bonus points. Kansas owned chhttp://www.2tourtopeka.net/2015/02/horizons0153.htmlains (headquartered in Lawrence, Wichita, etc) an automatic 5 bonus points and National chains (those headquartered outside the state) will garner an automatic 0 bonus points.

It has been seven months since our last burger review. Recently, we asked on our Facebook and Twitter pages for your suggestions of where we should go next. We listened and had a hard time deciding on which of the excellent suggestions to go to next. We ended up, deciding on Horizon's, a classic in the cities Oakland neighborhood. Owners, former professional boxers,  Derrick and Damon Reed also own Reed's Lakeside Bar and Grill (29th and Croco) as well as Reed's Ringside Bar and Grill (just north of Topeka) incidentally, their family is no stranger to the Topeka burger community, they are cousins of the Mentzer family, who owns The Pad, in North Topeka.

 Bonus Points: 10

1. Burger Patties Quality: 8
Our burgers were nice and juicy, with a hint of tenderized meat seasoning.  No overcooked burger here.  The only thing to make the burger taste better would have been Coca-Cola™ rather then Pepsi™.

2. Bun Quality:10
Toasted bun, but not overly toasted. The bun was soft and fresh tasting.

3. Customer Service: 8
Very friendly. Attentive to detail, taking our order accurately. Biggest concern came while we were eating. The ice cream freezer, is kept in the dinning room, rather the kitchen area and was next to the table we were eating at. The employee, retrieving ice cream for another customer, decided she had to put her butt in our face to get ice cream out to make a shake.

4. Garnish Quality: 10
The garnish was fresh and complemented the burger very nicely.

5. Fries Quality: 9
The fries was nice crispy and warm crinkle cut fries.  They however, were obviously, frozen french fries and had the same taste as the fries I prepare myself at home.

6. Atmosphere: 9
The atmosphere is somewhere between a fast food place and a casual family diner. A TV  in the corner droned with some sports talk program, which would be fine for someone interested in sports, but for us that aren't sports fans, CNN™ or Fox News™ would be better.

7. Order Accuracy: 10
The burgers were prepared exactly as the wife and I had asked.  I ordered mine with ketchup only.  The wife ordered hers with mayonnaise, ketchup and pickle only.

8. Cleanliness (Restrooms, Dinning area, Entrance, etc):  7
The entrance and dining area seemed well kept and clean. We didn't use or check the restrooms on this visit. Our biggest concern was the entrance mat was picked up and thrown in a wad on a bench for customers waiting for to go orders.

9. Building Accessibility: 7
The front doors were accessible. However, the issue was the parking lot.  There was only one handicapped stall, but was not accessible from the first drive we entered. Instead we had to turn around, exit the parking lot, re-entering the street, turning into the second drive that was signed drive thru, to access the one handicapped stall.  Since the parking lot is divided the way it is, it would be better if a handicapped stall was on either side of the sidewalk median.

10. Price: 8
Pricing was pretty much in line with other places. Though, the drinks were probably the most overpriced item. We paid a total of $14.66.
the Horizon burger $3.29 each (we ordered 2)
Large fries $2.99 (we ordered one)
small soda $1.95 each (we ordered two)
The biggest issue in this area, was that they had a problem with the credit card machine, that resulted in my debit card having a hold for $14.66 placed on it not once, but three times. So cash would be the best option to prevent this.  Much like we had to do when we visited The Prize Package.

Five Guys

We are on the search for the best burger in Topeka. Here is how we rate the burger joints that we will review. First we put heavy emphasis on where the joint is headquartered, Local (Topeka) will garner an automatic 10 bonus points. Kansas owned chains (headquartered in Lawrence, Wichita, etc) an automatic 5 bonus points and National chains (those headquartered outside the state) will garner an automatic 0 bonus points. All categories will earn a score between 1 and 10, with 10 being the highest and 1 being the poorest.

On December 19, 2014 the very first Five Guys opened in Topeka. Having ate at this National Chain (headquartered in Massachusetts) when I was last in Austin, TX.  So I was glad to see it was now in Kansas. Better yet, it was coming to Topeka. Unable to make it on opening day, the wife and I made a stop in on December 26th.  When we entered the place was packed.

Bonus Points: 0
Since this burger joint is a national chain the restaurant earned zero bonus points.

1. Burger Patties Quality: 10
The burger quality was very moist and was fully cooked. Making the burger very tasty. The flavor was enhanced with the best soda brand, Coca-Cola ™. Even better the restaurant offers the Coca-Cola ™ Freestyle ™ machine.

2. Bun Quality: 10
The bun was a fresh toasted sesame seed bun.

3. Customer Service: 10
We found the customer service excellent. All the employees were friendly and willing to take time to explain their menu to new customers.

4. Garnish Quality:  8
The tomatoes were a little green. Lettuce was fresh. No complaints with the pickles or onions.

5. Fries Quality: 10
Cooked in peanut oil these fries were excellent. Very fresh and hot. This is one of the very few places that actually make their own fries. No frozen potatoes at this restaurant.

6. Atmosphere: 10
Busy fast food restaurant with people waiting for a table. This is also the only burger place I've seen that brings in the peanut concept that some sit down restaurants have used over the years. Behind the counter, employees are lined up prepping burgers assembly line style.

7. Order Accuracy: 10
They got our order correct. We always special order our burgers to see how the burger place does. We both ordered what they call the "Little burger." Pat ordered hers with mayonnaise, lettuce, pickles, tomato and grilled onions. For mine I ordered ketchup only.

8. Cleanliness (Restrooms, Dinning area, Entrance, etc): 9
Entrance was well kept and clean.
Dining Area was littered with the discarded shells that the restaurant patrons had discarded on the floor and trampled under foot.
Neither of used the restroom on this visit, so we are unable to comment on their condition.

9. Building Accessibility: 9
The building was accessible. However, the ramp to access the building was done in a way that was more costly to the construction. Not only that it is done in a way that makes it harder for some people with mobility issues. The construction could have been done with the entrance on the ground level, instead when they built this building over the last few months  with steps and a long ramp to access it.

10. Price: 7
For two burgers, one large fries and two regular size drinks we paid $18.73. The burgers were tasty and there is something about paying for quality. However, I still have a problem with paying more then I have to.

I also felt a little deceived by the menu board. The burger at the top was simply called hamburger for $5.69. Turns out that burger is a double, even though the menu board doesn't say so. On down towards the bottom what one would think is a children's burger, the "Little Burger," is actually the single.  The "Little burger" sells for $3.99. Fries and drink not included.  So Pat and I shared  large fries ($4.69) . We each had our own regular size Coke™ product ($2.19 each).
Overall, we were disappointed that they didn't have any meal deals.

Miracle on Kansas was Spectacular.

The night of November 29, 2014 was a fun night for all those that attended the festivities of Miracle on Kansas in downtown Topeka. Rhe night started out at 5 pm with the annual Rescue Mission Run. At 5:30 the Christmas tree was lit. Normally in front of Westar, the tree was moved this year to the Capitols north lawn due to the construction that has been happening on Kansas Ave.

Followed by the parade, which this year made a loop around the Capitol complex. According to the promotional press release, spectators would be allowed to park along the parade route for the first time ever.  Making it sound as those with mobility issues would not have to try to walk or move about in pain for 2-3 blocks.  However, while it was technically true, what one would have to do is to be there and parked prior to the 3 pm shutting of the roads.  The closest we were able to get was the state parking lot (by the Judicial Center) on the South side of the state house. Then make our way to the North side.  Which is fine if a handicapped person is in a wheelchair or other mobility device, but for those who use crutches and whose knees don't bend, that creates a lot of pain. The last thing I want is to sound negative, but with this blogs ite also focusing on mobility issues, it is important to be openly honest in the facts.

With that I hope that you enjoy these pictures from the night.  The tree was beautiful and the the parade was spectacular.
